After a spectacular month in theaters, Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot is finally starting to wind down. The film, which has been hailed as the best-reviewed video game adaptation of all time, is now playing in roughly 2,700 theaters after shedding about 900 screens. That's a significant cut, but it's a natural step for a movie that has already enjoyed a remarkable run.
The horror reboot opened to near-universal acclaim in September, thanks in large part to its IMAX presentation and its ability to satisfy both longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers to the series. Even in its fifth weekend, the film managed to pull in around $5 million domestically, despite losing 380 theaters the week before. Now, with the latest reduction, it's clear the movie is making way for the next wave of releases.
A Record-Breaking Run
Cregger's Resident Evil has been a massive success, surpassing his previous hit Weapons in terms of box office. Weapons, which earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, finished its global run with $270 million against a modest $38 million budget. The new film has also overtaken Resident Evil: The Final Chapter's $314 million worldwide haul, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise that began 24 years ago.
With a Certified Fresh 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie isn't just the best-reviewed installment of the Resident Evil series—it's also the highest-rated video game adaptation ever. The critical consensus praises its "unforgettable scares" and Austin Abrams' comedic timing, calling it "a propulsive tribute to the pleasure and terror of playing a truly spooky video game."
Still Going Strong
As of now, Resident Evil has grossed nearly $150 million domestically and over $360 million worldwide. It opened in 3,684 theaters and is now down to 2,705, but it still has plenty of room to hit a few more milestones before heading to home video. Currently, it's the 13th-highest-grossing movie of 2026 globally, ahead of two major Disney disappointments: The Mandalorian and Grogu and the live-action Moana remake.
