As the leaves turn and pumpkin spice takes over, the spooky season is officially upon us—and what better way to celebrate than with a fresh dose of witchy entertainment? Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF, the irreverent comedy docu-series produced by Lilly Wachowski (co-director of The Matrix), is back with its sixth episode this week. We've got an exclusive sneak peek to get you in the mood.
The show, hosted by comedian and storyteller Cassie Workman, takes a delightfully unconventional approach to the history of black magic. Set in an occult bookstore, each episode dives into arcane topics like John Dee, tarot, and Aleister Crowley, but with a distinctly modern twist. It's a celebration of witchcraft from a female, queer, and LGBTQIA+ perspective, blending facts with puppetry, special effects makeup, and a roster of guest stars that includes comedian Ben Russell and Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson.
In our exclusive clip, Workman tackles the concept of demons and humanity's complicated relationship with them. Using impressively crafted puppets (courtesy of the team at Direct Message), the segment traces human history from the dawn of civilization to the present day. It's a witty commentary on how we've always invented supernatural monsters to scare ourselves, while often ignoring the very real—and all too human—figures who exploit our fears for power. The message is sharp, timely, and delivered with Workman's signature blend of humor and insight.
The series is a collaboration between Etch and Wachowski's production company, Anarchists United, with direction by Hannah Welever. Wachowski herself is a huge fan, saying, "Cassie Workman weaves a Charm of Making so wickedly delightful it turned me into a newt! Seriously, everyone needs to watch the fabulous and funny and informative Cassie Workman is Witchy AF immediately! I am so proud to be a producer on this and call her my friend!!! #NEWTLIFE"
Episode 6 of Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF premieres exclusively on Etch's YouTube channel on Wednesday, October 21. If you're new to the series, it's a perfect time to catch up—each episode is a standalone exploration, so you can jump right in.
Beyond her work on this series, Wachowski has been keeping busy as an executive producer.
