Stephen King fans have been spoiled for choice lately. With hits like The Running Man, The Monkey, and It: Welcome to Derry all landing in the past year, the King cinematic universe is thriving. But one of the most overlooked gems in the author's filmography is about to get a major accessibility boost.
Frank Darabont's 2007 film The Mist is set to stream for free on Kanopy starting May 15, 2026. For those unfamiliar, Kanopy is an ad-free platform that requires only a public library card or university login — no commercials, no catch. It's a perfect opportunity to revisit (or discover) a film that horror aficionados have long championed.
Darabont, the mastermind behind The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, brought King's novella to life with a blend of creature horror and psychological dread. The monsters — Lovecraftian beasts that recall The Thing — are only half the terror. The real horror unfolds as ordinary people, trapped in a supermarket, descend into paranoia and violence. It's a slow-burn drama that earns every scream.
The film holds a solid 74% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but its true legacy is its ending. Widely considered one of the bleakest, most nihilistic conclusions in cinema history, Darabont's finale even won King's approval — the author has said he prefers it to his own original ending. That gut-punch of a climax is a big reason why The Mist remains a cult favorite.

Meanwhile, a new adaptation is on the horizon. Horror maestro Mike Flanagan — who delivered stellar King adaptations with Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and Life of Chuck — is set to write and direct a fresh big-screen take on The Mist. Flanagan has promised his version will diverge significantly from Darabont's, starting from page one. But with a packed schedule that includes a Carrie miniseries (premiering this October), a Clayface movie, and an Exorcist film starring Scarlett Johansson (set for 2027), Flanagan's Mist won't arrive anytime soon. That gives fans plenty of time to revisit the 2007 classic.
For those who can't wait, The Mist is currently available on The Roku Channel. But starting May 15, Kanopy offers a free, ad-free alternative. Don't miss this chance to experience one of King's most underrated adaptations — and that unforgettable ending.
