Paramount+ has become the go-to destination for crime dramas, and much of that reputation is thanks to Taylor Sheridan. The mastermind behind Yellowstone has built an empire of gritty, character-driven series that keep viewers hooked. But as Sheridan prepares to move to NBCUniversal, his latest release is facing unexpected competition from a fellow crime kingpin.
This week, Tulsa King Season 4 made its highly anticipated debut, starring Sylvester Stallone as Dwight "The General" Manfredi, a mob boss who builds a new criminal enterprise in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The show has been a massive hit for Paramount+, even spawning a spin-off, Frisco King, with Samuel L. Jackson in the lead. Yet, despite all that momentum, the new season hasn't claimed the top spot on the streaming service's charts.
Instead, MobLand Season 2, from director Guy Ritchie, continues to dominate. With a star-studded cast including Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren, the series has held the #1 position on Paramount+, leaving Tulsa King at #2. It's a surprising turn for a show that usually tops the rankings without breaking a sweat.
Ritchie has become a force in television, with hits like The Gentlemen on Netflix and Young Sherlock on Prime Video. But MobLand is his biggest success yet, and it's giving Sheridan a run for his money. The two crime sagas offer different flavors—Sheridan's is more grounded and character-driven, while Ritchie's is stylish and fast-paced—but both are drawing massive audiences.
So, will Tulsa King eventually overtake MobLand? Given that Tulsa King is just starting its season and MobLand is nearing its finale, it's likely that the Stallone-led series will soon reclaim the throne. But for now, the rivalry is a testament to the strength of both shows and the platform's commitment to the genre.
Looking ahead, Sheridan has plenty more in the pipeline. Beyond Tulsa King and Marshals, he's working on new seasons of Dutton Ranch, Landman, The Madison, and Mayor of Kingstown. He's also attached to Paramount's Call of Duty adaptation. Fans of his work have a lot to look forward to, even as he transitions to a new home.
