Apple TV+ is making a rare but strategic move by giving its upcoming epic Tenzing a theatrical release before it hits the streaming platform. The film, starring Tom Hiddleston as Sir Edmund Hillary, will arrive in select theaters on October 9, 2026, and begin streaming on Apple TV+ just one week later, on October 16.

Directed by Jennifer Peedom, Tenzing tells the remarkable true story of Tenzing Norgay, the first recorded climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest. While many know the name Edmund Hillary, Norgay's own journey—from serving as a porter for British expeditions to becoming a global icon—has remained largely untold. Genden Phuntsok portrays the Himalayan climber, with Hiddleston playing his New Zealand climbing partner.

The 10 Best Netflix Original Movies Ever Made, Ranked
From Oscar-winning dramas like Roma to underrated thrillers like The Stranger, these are the best Netflix original movies ranked by quality and impact.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Willem Dafoe as Colonel Hunt and Caitríona Balfe as Jill Henderson. Their characters help convince the expedition leader to elevate Norgay from a support role to a full-fledged climber, setting the stage for a historic ascent that would change mountaineering forever.

At its core, Tenzing explores a clash of worldviews. While Western climbers saw Everest as a conquest to be conquered, Norgay revered the mountain—known traditionally as Chomolungma—as a living entity. This philosophical divide becomes central to the story, as the climb strips everyone down to their essence and reveals what they're truly made of.

Apple TV+ has been increasingly selective about theatrical releases, reserving them for films with strong awards potential. Previous titles like Killers of the Flower Moon and Brad Pitt's F1 followed similar strategies, and Tenzing appears poised to follow that path. The streamer's willingness to give this film a theatrical window signals confidence in its storytelling and its ability to draw audiences to cinemas.

After his historic climb, Norgay became a global celebrity, earning a spot on Time's 100 Most Influential People of the 21st Century. He wrote a memoir detailing his life, married three times, and had seven children. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, including actor Tenzing Trainor (Liv and Maddie). Norgay passed away in 1986 at age 71 from a cerebral hemorrhage.

For fans of Hiddleston and epic true stories, Tenzing promises to be a compelling addition to Apple TV+'s growing library of prestige films. With its theatrical release just over a year away, anticipation is already building for this untold chapter of mountaineering history.
