For eight seasons, The Rookie has evolved from a fresh take on the police procedural into a more traditional ensemble drama. But now, the ABC hit is circling back to its roots with a new character who mirrors the show's original premise.
At New York Comic Con, showrunner Alexi Hawley announced that Troian Bellisario, best known for her role as Spencer Hastings on Pretty Little Liars, will join the cast for Season 9. She'll play Stephanie "Stevie" Monroe, a single mother of two who decides to become a police officer after a painful divorce. This storyline is a direct callback to John Nolan's (Nathan Fillion) own journey, as he was a freshly divorced contractor who joined the LAPD in the pilot.
Stevie's arrival marks a significant shift for the series, which has largely moved away from its "rookie" concept. While the show has introduced other new officers over the years, they've typically been younger and without the baggage of a midlife crisis. The only previous attempt at a middle-aged rookie was Greg Grunberg's Larry Macer, who flunked out on his first day in a comedic subplot. Stevie, however, is a serious character, and her pairing with Officer Nolan is clearly intentional.
During the panel, Fillion joked about the irony, saying, "Someone through the midpoint of their life deciding they want to be a police officer? I don't know if it'll work, but okay." But Hawley's decision to bring in a character like Stevie suggests a desire to explore the challenges and triumphs of starting over later in life, a theme that resonated with audiences in the show's early seasons.
Bellisario is no stranger to playing law enforcement, having starred as Officer Traci Harmon in Prime Video's On Call. In that series, she played a training officer, so the role of a rookie will be a reversal for her. Her character's journey will likely parallel Nolan's, but with a modern twist. As a working mom, Stevie will face unique challenges that Nolan, who had a son in college, didn't have to navigate.
The addition of Bellisario comes at a time when The Rookie is expanding its universe. The show has already spawned a spin-off, The Rookie: Feds, and a new one, The Rookie: North, is in the works. With Bellisario's character, the original series seems to be doubling down on its core identity, reminding viewers why they fell in love with the show in the first place.
Season 9 of The Rookie is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. The series also stars Alyssa Diaz, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine. As the show continues to evolve, Stevie's story promises to bring a fresh perspective while honoring the journey that made John Nolan a fan favorite.
