FX's The Lowdown quietly became one of the most compelling crime dramas of the past year, blending neo-noir mystery with family drama and a touch of dark comedy. Now, with Season 2 on the horizon—and Tommy Lee Jones joining the cast as the father of Ethan Hawke's protagonist—there's no better time to revisit the twists and turns that made Season 1 so gripping.
The Setup: A Death That Wasn't What It Seemed
The series kicks off with the apparent suicide of Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), a quirky writer and the black sheep of a powerful political family. But Lee Rayborn (Ethan Hawke), a Tulsa journalist and bookseller who calls himself a "truthstorian," isn't buying it. His investigation pulls him into the Washbergs' orbit, revealing a web of secrets tied to a shady real estate deal with the Akron development group.
Lee discovers that Dale had hidden letters inside classic novels—clues that point to a much darker truth. With help from antiques dealer Ray (Michael Hitchcock) and tabloid editor Cyrus (Killer Mike), Lee digs deeper, uncovering an affair between Dale's widow, Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn), and his brother Donald (Kyle MacLachlan), who's running for governor.
The Conspiracy Unravels
As Lee gets closer to the truth, he learns that Dale had stumbled onto a conspiracy involving land stolen from a Native American tribe, which was massacred by white nationalists. Dale had been working with Arthur Williams (Graham Greene), the grandson of the tribe's leader, and Arthur's grandson, street artist Chutto McIntosh (Mato Wayuhi). The land was about to be sold to Akron's boss, Frank Martin (Tracy Letts), who had ties to a white supremacist group called "the 46," led by Pastor Mark Sternwick (Paul Sparks).
Lee's investigation puts him in danger, but he finds an unlikely ally in private investigator Marty Brunner (Keith David). Marty initially works for Donald but is won over by Lee's integrity, even after being interrogated by the 46's thugs. Meanwhile, Frank murders Arthur to steal Dale's will, and Lee narrowly escapes a deadly confrontation, leading to a tense citizen's arrest attempt.
The Truth Comes Out
The season's climax reveals that Betty Jo and Frank were working together to steal the land. They had hired ex-con Allen Murphy (Scott Shepherd) to intimidate Dale, but the white supremacists accidentally killed him. Betty Jo then manipulated the evidence to make it look like suicide. When Donald learns the truth, he's horrified and decides to honor his brother's wishes by giving the land back to Chutto, who plans to make it a homeland for the Osage Nation.
Donald wins the governorship, and Frank meets a fitting end at the hands of Bonnie (Dale Dickey), whose son was killed by Allen. Betty Jo flees town, leaving justice incomplete—but Lee finds some resolution in his personal life.
Lee's Personal Journey
Throughout the case, Lee struggles to be a better father to his daughter Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), who shares his talent for writing. After a brief reunion with his ex-wife Samantha (Kaniehtiio Horn), Lee realizes she's better off with her fiancé, and he focuses on being present for Francis. She helps preserve Dale's books, which become crucial evidence, and Lee finally makes it to her poetry reading, earning her heartfelt acknowledgment that he's a good man.
Season 1 ends with Lee writing a new article about Dale, having found a measure of peace. But with Season 2 introducing Tommy Lee Jones as Lee's father, the stage is set for new complications. For fans of gripping crime thrillers, The Lowdown is a must-watch, and this recap should have you ready for what's next.
Season 2 of The Lowdown premieres October 14 on FX. If you're looking for more recaps before a new season, or want to explore other mystery series, we've got you covered.
