Prime Video has carved out a niche as the go-to destination for romantic adaptations, from the steamy Off Campus series to the beloved The Summer I Turned Pretty. Now, the streamer has struck gold again with The Love Hypothesis, a film that has skyrocketed to the top of its charts.
Released on Wednesday, September 23, The Love Hypothesis stars Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) and Tom Bateman (Based on a True Story). The movie is based on Ali Hazelwood's New York Times bestseller, which famously began as fan-fiction for the Star Wars characters Rey and Kylo Ren—affectionately known as 'Reylo' to fans. This sci-fi pedigree has undoubtedly fueled its popularity, but the film's charm and chemistry stand on their own.
In a delightful twist, Bateman is the real-life partner of Star Wars star Daisy Ridley, making the adaptation feel almost destined. Whether it's the Force or just good storytelling, The Love Hypothesis has become the most-watched movie on Prime Video in the U.S., surpassing even the magical heist thriller Now You See Me: Now You Don't, starring Mark Ruffalo. For those who love a good romance with a nerdy twist, this is a must-watch.
A Sequel Is Already on the Horizon
Fans of the film will be thrilled to know that a sequel is in the works. Hazelwood's follow-up novel, The Two-Body Problem, is set for release on February 2, 2027, and a film adaptation is already being developed. The book continues the story of Adam and Olive, diving into the challenges of long-term relationships—from postdoctoral chaos to the eternal question of what to have for dinner.
Hazelwood herself described the sequel as a mix of slice-of-life and unflinching exploration of love's everyday hurdles. It's a promise of more heartwarming, laugh-out-loud moments that made the first book and film so endearing.
