In Apple TV+'s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, Tatiana Maslany's Paula is a woman on the edge—a newly divorced soccer mom whose chaotic life spirals into a blackmail-murder scandal. But Episode 4, which Maslany describes as a 'horror' turn, peels back the layers of her marriage to Karl (Jake Johnson) and reveals a side of Paula we never saw coming.
Created by David Rosen, the comedic thriller has kept audiences guessing: Is Cam Boy Trevor (Brandon Flynn) behind the blackmail? Can Paula's nosy co-workers (Charlie Hall and Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg) actually help? Episode 4 answers some questions while raising darker ones, focusing on the pivotal moment Paula and Karl's marriage began to unravel. It's a bottle episode that pauses the main narrative to explore the past, and Maslany says it's where the show's true 'horror' emerges.
Maslany on Paula's Unpredictability
'Paula was a question mark for me,' Maslany told Collider. 'I couldn't place her. She's at a point where she doesn't know who she is, and that's incredibly powerful.' The actress, known for Orphan Black and She-Hulk, was drawn to the show's genre-defying tone. 'Each scene had so much potential—humor, brutality, pain, lightness. It's a real gift as an actor.'
Maslany's process for Paula was instinctual, shaped by her own life at the time. 'I was about to turn 40, and there's this grief of not knowing who you are when you're thrust into adult chaos like divorce and exes. It was nebulous and hard to pin down.'
The Mother-Daughter Bond That Steals the Show
One of the series' highlights is Paula's relationship with her daughter Hazel (Nola Wallace). 'From the start, Nola was so great,' Maslany says. 'We both have that sense of play, and it made their bond feel real.' Their scenes together are a tender counterpoint to the show's darker twists.
Episode 4 challenges everything viewers thought they knew about Paula, Karl, and the mysterious events in Portland. As Maslany puts it, 'The horror of Episode 4 is that Paula's world collapses, and you see her at her most vulnerable—and most dangerous.'
