I've always been drawn to racing games that let chaos reign. Give me blistering speed, responsive controls, and the promise of spectacular crashes, and I'm hooked. That's why Star Wars: Galactic Racer immediately caught my attention. I grew up with the arcade classic Star Wars: Racer Arcade, and the thought of returning to Tatooine's dusty tracks filled me with nostalgia and high hopes.

Now, playing on PS5, I can confidently say that Galactic Racer not only meets those expectations but surpasses them. The game delivers a smoother, more polished racing experience than its predecessors, with modern graphics that make every planet feel alive. The speed is intoxicating, the handling is superb, and even the crashes are laugh-out-loud fun. I went in hoping for a worthy return to Star Wars racing—I came away with my new favorite racing game.

Ben Affleck's Hypnotic: The Inception-Esque Thriller Dominating Hulu This October
Ben Affleck's Hypnotic, a mind-bending sci-fi thriller, is climbing Hulu's charts. We dive into why this Inception-like film is worth a stream.

High Stakes in the Galactic League

Developed by Fuse Games, Galactic Racer is set after the fall of the Empire, where an underground racing circuit called the Galactic League offers glory to those brave enough to compete. You play as Shade, a pilot who gets pulled into a rivalry with the reigning champion, Kestar Bool. The League's founder, Darius Pax, needs help maintaining order, setting the stage for a campaign filled with ambition, money, and dangerous machinery.

The campaign structure is more than just a series of races. You choose branching paths through events, earning rewards and upgrading your vehicle along the way. Races are interspersed with elimination challenges, field tests, and mystery encounters, each offering different incentives. Winning is important, but so are the decisions you make about which events to tackle and how to prepare.

There are real consequences for failure. Crash too often or miss placement targets, and you'll lose League Entry Tokens—lose them all, and your run ends. Some progress carries over, including resources that unlock new vehicles and improve base stats. This adds a strategic layer that keeps the campaign engaging beyond just crossing the finish line first.

Handling That Makes Racing a Joy

The core racing mechanics are where Galactic Racer truly shines. The combination of speed, steering, and drifting feels fantastic, making every lap a thrill. The vehicle lineup is diverse, including landspeeders that drift through corners, speeder bikes that convert braking energy into a Kinetic Burst, and skim speeders that use a Knife Edge maneuver for tight spaces. Podracers are a separate class, so don't expect a full Episode I: Racer remake—but that's okay, because each vehicle type offers a unique challenge.

Drifting, in particular, is a joy. The landspeeder's handling is smooth and satisfying, and the boost systems add an element of risk. The Afterburner gives you a rechargeable boost, while the Ramjet becomes available at high speeds—but push it too far, and you'll overheat and explode. Trust me, you'll push it too far, and it's hilarious every time.

Environmental conditions also play a role, making each planet more than just a pretty backdrop. The game understands that Star Wars racing has always been about questionable decisions made at tremendous speed, and it embraces that spirit wholeheartedly.

Tatooine and Beyond: A Visual Feast

Of course, the Boonta Eve Classic on Tatooine was a personal highlight. Racing there with these visuals and this level of smoothness was everything I wanted from a return to podracing. The game also features Jakku, Ando Prime, and Crait—the latter being the most visually striking backdrop—along with worlds like Lantaana and Sentinel One. Each location feels distinct and adds to the overall experience.

If you're a fan of Star Wars racing games, or just love a good arcade racer, Galactic Racer is a must-play. It's the most addictive Star Wars game in years, and it's not even close.
