With Spider-Man: Brand New Day swinging into theaters soon, director Destin Daniel Cretton is opening up about his vision for the next chapter of Peter Parker's MCU journey. Taking over from Jon Watts, Cretton—who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings—is bringing a fresh, darker energy to the web-slinger's world, thanks in part to the introduction of Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.
In an exclusive interview with Collider's editor-in-chief, Cretton revealed how he balanced the film's heavier emotional stakes with the trademark Spider-Man humor fans love. "We're still doing a Spider-Man movie," he said. "It's a fun, exhilarating movie with quippy Spider-Man, but he's in his 20s now, dealing with real life—and real life is hard." That real-life struggle includes Peter's isolation after the events of No Way Home, where no one remembers his identity, and his surprising alliance with the brutal vigilante Punisher.
How The Punisher Fits Into Spider-Man's World
Cretton explained that bringing Frank Castle into a PG-13 Spider-Man story required careful thought. "He's a bit older, he's in his 20s, and he is dealing with real life," the director said, noting that the Punisher's presence introduces a darker tone without losing the fun. The team-up is a natural extension of Peter's loneliness and the moral complexities he faces. Parkour and Wingsuit-Inspired Cinematography
One of the most talked-about aspects of Brand New Day is its innovative cinematography. Cretton revealed that the team studied parkour and wingsuit videos to create shots that make audiences feel like they're inside Spider-Man's mask. "We wanted to remind people that Peter Parker is in that suit," he said. "By placing the camera in positions that create vertigo and speed, we give viewers a new experience of what it's like to be that high and moving that fast." These shots are a departure from previous Spider-Man films and promise to thrill longtime fans.
Editing Room Insights and Deleted Scenes
When asked about the editing process, Cretton shared that the first cut of the film ran close to three hours, but the final version is a leaner two hours and 24 minutes. Surprisingly, he noted there aren't many deleted scenes. "It wasn't ever a battle of trying to keep things in the movie that I wanted," he said. "The movie is the right length it should be." This efficiency is a testament to Cretton's experience, which includes his work on the first cut that earned cheers from Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.
Wonder Man Season 2 Update
During the interview, Cretton also gave a brief update on Wonder Man Season 2, which he's involved with. "I hope so," he said with a laugh when asked about filming this year. While details remain under wraps, fans of the series are eager for more.
