The world of Slow Horses has never been kind to its characters, and the sixth season of the Apple TV+ spy thriller proved that no one—not even its young lead—is safe. After a season that saw Slough House agents hunted by professional assassins, the finale delivered a gut-punch twist that leaves River Cartwright's (Jack Lowden) life hanging by a thread. But is this the end for the MI5 reject, or just a temporary setback?
A Poisoned Finale
In the season's closing moments, River returns to his grandfather's home, where Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) has been hiding out. As he prepares a romantic nightcap, he picks up a crowbar he'd left earlier—and notices a sticky residue on his fingers. Before he can react, he collapses, poisoned by a neurotoxin left by the assassin Jim (Kyle Soller) during an earlier infiltration. It's a chilling end to a season that already claimed the lives of J.K. Coe (Tom Brooke) and Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley).
Showrunner Gaby Chiappe told The Wrap that the twist was always part of the plan, following author Mick Herron's lead. "It's a really interesting thing Mick did," she said. "It's a bit like, 'You know I'll kill people. But you think I'll kill everyone except Lamb and River. Well, what if I do this to River?' You don't know if he's dead or alive."
What the Books Reveal
For fans desperate for answers, Herron's novel Bad Actors—the source material for season 7—confirms River's fate. In the book, River is hospitalized and recovering from Novichok poisoning, but he survives. He's largely absent from the plot, sidelined as he recuperates, but he lives to fight another day. That means Lowden's absence from the season 7 trailer might not be a death sentence, but rather a sign that River will be on the bench for a while.
A River-Less Season Could Be a Good Thing
While River's absence might disappoint some fans, it could actually benefit the show's sprawling ensemble. With River out of action, characters like Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) and Shirley Dander (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) could step into the spotlight. The season 7 trailer hints at a bigger role for Shirley, who struggles with her own demons while Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) forces her into support meetings. Roddy, reeling from Flyte's death, might finally get a chance to prove he's more than just a tech guy. Even Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) seems to be getting more hands-on.
Another possibility is the full-time return of Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar), who survived the season and could follow her arc from Bad Actors. The novel also introduces new agents, including Ashley Khan, who will be played by former Doctor Who star Varada Sethu. With new faces and old favorites getting more screen time, a River-less season could shake up the formula in exciting ways.
Of course, River's story isn't over. Herron's books have proven that he's a survivor, and his recovery could set up a dramatic return in a future season. For now, fans will have to wait and see if Lowden's absence is temporary or a sign of bigger changes ahead. Either way, Slow Horses continues to prove that in the world of espionage, no one is ever truly safe.
