Sherlock Holmes has been reimagined countless times—from the eccentric BBC version to the action-packed Guy Ritchie films, and even as a garden gnome. But now, the world's greatest detective is returning to television in a way fans have never seen before: an adults-only animated series that promises to push boundaries.

Harry King Television, in collaboration with Shrek producer David Lipman, is developing a new animated series currently titled Animated Sherlock. The show will draw from Sercombe's The Unexpurgated Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a source that allows the creative team to explore the character's darker, more risqué side. As Sercombe told Variety, “Taking the animation route allows us to reimagine Sherlock Holmes on a grander, more imaginative and risqué scale than before. Having David, Michael, and Tim steering the series with us combines their legacy in animation with the well-loved classic IP.”

Prime Video has confirmed that The Terminal List Season 2, starring Chris Pratt, will debut on October 21, 2026. The series is gaining momentum on streaming charts ahead of its return.

This isn't just another Sherlock adaptation. The series is aimed at mature audiences and will feature season-long arcs, while also delving into original cases from Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories, first published between 1887 and 1927. The team behind the project includes Lipman (best known for the Shrek franchise), Tim John (A Street Cat Named Bob), and Michael Ryan (Planet 51, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank).

What Will the New Sherlock Holmes Series Focus On?

With the freedom of an animated format and multiple episodes per season, the series will have room to breathe, allowing deeper exploration of iconic characters like Dr. Watson, landlady Mrs. Hudson, and the criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty. “Together we are creating our very own Sherlock Holmes universe that feels both timeless and completely fresh – rich in character, humor, and adventure,” Sercombe added.
