Marvel fans, take heart: the long-awaited sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is still very much alive. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has broken his silence on the project, confirming that development is ongoing—five years after the sequel was first announced.
In a recent interview, Cretton addressed the prolonged silence, explaining that the original film's release during the COVID-19 pandemic created unique challenges. “We are developing a second one,” he said. “What's going on is what went on with the entire industry since that movie came out. It was successful, but it actually came out weirdly. It was successful at the time when there was a new wave of COVID hitting. So, it was still successful, but I think many countries were completely shut down to theaters at the time. After that, there were just crazy changes all over the place. It's just a result of the industry.”
The first Shang-Chi film, starring Simu Liu as the titular hero, was a critical and commercial hit, grossing over $432 million worldwide. It earned a Certified Fresh 92% critics' score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with Oscar and Saturn Award nominations. The story followed Shang-Chi as he was drawn into the world of the Ten Rings, a criminal organization led by his father, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), and eventually discovered the mystical realm of Ta Lo.
Since the sequel's announcement in 2021, Cretton has been busy with other Marvel projects, including the Wonder Man series (which recently earned a rare Season 2 renewal) and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Meanwhile, Simu Liu is set to reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday, keeping the character in the MCU spotlight.
Fans have been eager for news, and Cretton's update aligns with comments Liu made in 2024, when he hinted that the sequel was still in the works. While no release date has been set, the confirmation that Cretton and his team are actively developing the script is a promising sign.
For those who haven't seen the original, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available to stream on Disney+. The film also introduced Awkwafina as Katy, Shang-Chi's best friend, and Meng'er Zhang as his sister, Xu Xialing. Critics praised the movie for its martial arts choreography, Liu's performance, and Tony Leung's nuanced villain—a far cry from the underwhelming bad guys of some earlier MCU entries.
As the industry continues to evolve, Cretton's update offers a glimmer of hope that Shang-Chi's next chapter will eventually reach the big screen. Stay tuned for more updates on this and other Marvel projects.
