Jane Austen's first published novel is getting a fresh coat of paint, and the first trailer has arrived to prove it. Sense and Sensibility, directed by Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean), is set to open in US theaters on October 16, and it brings together a cast that should have period-drama fans clearing their calendars.
At the center of the story are the Dashwood sisters, whose comfortable life is upended after their father's death leaves them in reduced circumstances. Elinor, the elder and more reserved sibling, is played by Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters, Normal People), while Esmé Creed-Miles (The Chronology of Water) steps into the role of the younger, more impulsive Marianne. The trailer highlights their close bond as they navigate the pressures of adulthood and the messy business of love.
George MacKay (1917) takes on the part of Edward Ferrars, the unassuming gentleman who captures Elinor's heart. Marianne, meanwhile, finds herself pulled between two very different men: the steady, much older Colonel Brandon, played by Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World), and the charming but potentially deceptive John Willoughby, portrayed by Frank Dillane (The Essex Serpent).
Adding star power to the ensemble is Caitríona Balfe, who plays the Dashwood matriarch. This marks her first major screen role since Outlander wrapped its final season earlier this year. Fans still mourning the end of that saga may find some comfort in seeing her trade time-traveling romance for Regency-era drama — though her continued streaming dominance suggests she's not easily forgotten.
The screenplay comes from newcomer Diana Reid, adapting Austen's 1811 novel, which was originally published anonymously. The book has been adapted many times, most famously in Ang Lee's 1995 film starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. Oakley's version aims to bring a contemporary sensibility to the classic tale while staying true to its emotional core.
Austen season is upon us
This fall and winter are shaping up to be a busy time for Jane Austen enthusiasts. Netflix is preparing a six-part miniseries adaptation of Pride and Prejudice from writer Dolly Alderton, with Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden, Olivia Colman, and Rufus Sewell leading the cast. Meanwhile, The Other Bennet Sister, based on Janice Hadlow's novel that flips the perspective on Pride and Prejudice, already aired on the BBC and BritBox earlier this year, and a three-part Christmas special continuation is expected during the holidays.
For those who prefer their period dramas with a side of supernatural intrigue, there's also the upcoming return of a gothic favorite to look forward to. But Sense and Sensibility remains the purist's pick this season.
With its talented young leads, a respected director at the helm, and a script from a fresh voice, this adaptation could introduce Austen's classic to a new generation while giving longtime fans something to savor. The trailer promises lush visuals, simmering romantic tension, and the kind of sisterly dynamic that makes the story endure.
