As the first season of ABC's sun-drenched crime drama R.J. Decker barrels toward its finale, star Scott Speedman is bringing his rough-edged investigator full circle. The episode promises to unravel the mystery that started it all: the fateful day R.J. was framed for assault and sentenced to 18 months behind bars. But as a new exclusive clip reveals, the truth is far more twisted than anyone imagined.
The sneak peek opens with R.J. laying out the story everyone thinks they know. Lucas Ochoa (Maximo Salas) broke into his car and stole a camera. R.J. caught him, a fight ensued, and the powerful Ochoa family—led by corrupt Senator Victor Ochoa (David Zayas)—rigged the trial. But last week's episode dropped a bombshell: Lucas's theft wasn't random. It was a targeted hit ordered by his father to destroy incriminating evidence R.J. had unwittingly captured.
Now, the team must figure out which of R.J.'s assignments contained the damning footage. The clip narrows it down to two possibilities: a baby hippo birth (adorable, but unlikely) and a mob-style hit at a diner where a financial advisor was murdered. R.J. was the first on the scene, but he can't recall snapping anything that would threaten a senator. That missing piece—the angle they've all overlooked—is the key to the entire conspiracy.
The season finale will be a race to connect the dots between that hit and Victor Ochoa. If R.J. and his inner circle—including his journalist ex (Adelaide Clemens), her detective wife (Bevin Bru), his cellmate best friend (Kevin Rankin), and the conflicted Emi Ochoa (Jaina Lee Ortiz)—can pull it off, they might finally put the senator behind bars. But without R.J.'s old camera, the task is nearly impossible.
Created by Robert Doherty and loosely based on Carl Hiaasen's satirical crime thriller Double Whammy, R.J. Decker has quickly become a colorful addition to ABC's procedural lineup, alongside hits like High Potential and Will Trent. The series currently holds a 75% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider's Jennie Richardson giving it a 7/10. Its premiere drew 3.69 million viewers on ABC and over 11 million across Disney platforms, making it the network's most-watched 10 p.m. drama in five years. While ratings have since leveled off, the show's recent move to the 9 p.m. slot signals confidence from the network—though a Season 2 renewal has yet to be announced.
For fans of twisty procedurals, R.J. Decker offers the same kind of addictive, character-driven storytelling that made Blindspot a streaming hit. And with the finale promising to deliver the most personal and high-stakes case yet, viewers won't want to miss a minute.
The R.J. Decker season finale airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Check out the exclusive sneak peek in the player above.
