For horror fans, Halloween wouldn't be the same without Sam, the tiny trick-or-treater in orange pajamas who makes sure everyone respects the rules of the holiday. Now, Trick 'r Treat's iconic enforcer is celebrating a major milestone: 30 years since his very first appearance.

Sam's journey began not in the 2007 anthology film, but in Season's Greetings, a four-minute animated short that writer-director Michael Dougherty created as a student at NYU in 1996. That hand-drawn oddity introduced the world to the burlap-masked character who would later become a Halloween staple. To honor the anniversary, Dougherty has launched SAM: THE SOUL OF HALLOWEEN, a new creative hub for all things Sam.

These horror films don't just want to scare you—they want to break your brain. From 'Malignant' to 'The Substance,' here are the most gloriously unhinged, ranked.

The project promises original short films, animation, artwork, artist collaborations, and limited-edition merchandise. Starting October 1, Sam's official website and social channels will roll out fresh content throughout the spooky season. Additionally, a newly restored 4K edition of Season's Greetings will screen at more than 30 festivals and independent theaters in October.

A Return to Handmade Roots

Dougherty is using the anniversary to spotlight Sam's indie origins. The project brings together artists and filmmakers working across traditional and digital animation, stop-motion, illustration, sculpture, and photography. October's lineup includes Breehn Burns, Steven Rhodes, Christopher Shy, Trent Shy, Michael Ballif, and more, with surprise collaborators still to be announced.

Each artist will offer their own take on Sam, allowing the character to shift between styles and stories. For Dougherty, that creative freedom echoes the DIY spirit of his original short. "Trick 'r Treat obviously became a huge part of Sam's story, and I remain incredibly proud of that film," he said in a statement. "But Trick 'r Treat wasn't the first chapter in Sam's story, and it won't be the last. It really started with this weird little hand-drawn animated short I made as a film student. And for the 30th anniversary, it felt like the perfect time to go back to those roots — handmade, independent and artist-driven — and see where Sam might wander next."

Fans eager to revisit Sam's big-screen outing can also stream Trick 'r Treat on HBO Max this Halloween season. The film remains a cult favorite, but as Dougherty notes, it's only one piece of Sam's larger mythology.

Where to Catch the Anniversary Screenings

The 4K restoration of Season's Greetings will play at venues and festivals including Screamfest in Los Angeles, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Chicago's Music Box Theatre, the Texas Theatre in Dallas, Vancouver Horror Show, and Telluride Horror Show. Additional screenings will be announced as the celebration continues.

New SAM: THE SOUL OF HALLOWEEN content began rolling out today, with more releases and Season's Greetings screenings scheduled throughout October. For those who love when horror gets a little weird and handmade, this anniversary is a treat worth savoring.
