Sam Heughan may have hung up Jamie Fraser's kilt, but he's not slowing down. After eight seasons of Outlander, the actor is trading the Scottish Highlands for the high-stakes world of corporate crisis management in a new thriller for Paramount+. He'll be sharing the screen with an Oscar-winning legend, making this one of the most anticipated projects of the year.
According to Deadline, Heughan has signed on to star in Ascent, a new series from acclaimed writer John Logan (Gladiator, Skyfall). The show centers on Ascent Ventures, a firm that specializes in damage control for corporations in deep trouble. Viola Davis will lead the cast as Catriona, a ruthless fixer who must use every trick in her arsenal to save her estranged daughter. Heughan will play Conal, one of Ascent's top agents—a charismatic chameleon who stops at nothing to get to his targets. The dynamic between Catriona and Conal promises to be electric, with the question of whether they'll be allies or adversaries hanging in the balance.
This isn't Heughan's first post-Outlander gig. He's already set to star in the upcoming MGM+ thriller Embassy, alongside J.K. Simmons and Anna Kendrick, about an attack on the U.S. Embassy in London. He's also kept busy with films like The Spy Who Dumped Me and Bloodshot. But Ascent marks a major get for Paramount+, which continues to build a reputation for high-caliber original programming.
The project also brings together some serious creative firepower. John Logan, who created and will showrun the series, has a résumé that includes Oscar-nominated scripts for Gladiator and The Aviator, as well as the Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. He recently wrote the script for the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which grossed over a billion dollars this year. Executive producers include Michael Aguilar and Viola Davis and Julius Tennon through their JuVee Productions banner.
For Heughan, Ascent represents a chance to stretch his range. While Jamie Fraser was a man of honor and loyalty, Conal is described as a social shapeshifter—someone who can blend into any environment and manipulate situations to his advantage. It's a far cry from the romantic hero fans fell in love with, and it's exactly the kind of role that could redefine his post-Outlander career.
Paramount+ has been making waves with its original slate, from Taylor Sheridan's expanding universe to high-profile limited series. The addition of Ascent with Davis and Heughan only strengthens its lineup. The series is currently in development, with no release date announced yet. But given the talent involved, it's safe to say this will be one to watch.
While fans wait for more details, they can catch Heughan in Embassy next year, or revisit his iconic turn in Outlander, which concluded its run in May. And for those who can't get enough of the Outlander universe, the prequel Blood of My Blood continues to perform well on Starz. Meanwhile, Paramount+ is also riding high on the success of Taylor Sheridan's The Madison, which has spent over 100 days in the streamer's top 10.
As Ascent moves through development, expect more casting news and a production timeline to emerge. For now, it's a thrilling prospect to see two powerhouse actors go head-to-head in a high-stakes thriller from a master storyteller. Stay tuned.
