Fans of the S.W.A.T. universe have reason to celebrate: the upcoming spin-off S.W.A.T. Exiles has already secured a second season, even before its first episode airs. Shemar Moore, who returns as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, broke the news on Instagram, sending excitement through the franchise's loyal fanbase.
"I got such great news," Moore shared in a video. "S.W.A.T. Exiles just got picked up for Season 2, baby. That's right. We start shooting in a couple months." The early renewal signals strong confidence from Starz in the project, which is set to premiere on September 25, 2026.
A New Chapter for Hondo
The spin-off picks up after Hondo steps away from leading the 20-David Squad. According to the official logline, he's called back into action to head a last-chance experimental S.W.A.T. unit composed of untested and unpredictable young recruits. His mission: bridge a generational gap, manage conflicting personalities, and transform a team of outsiders into a cohesive force capable of defending the city and preserving the program that shaped his identity.
This new premise offers a fresh dynamic while keeping the high-octane action that made the original series a hit. The show also brings back familiar faces from the parent series, including Jay Harrington as Sergeant David "Deacon" Kay, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, and David Lim as Victor Tan.
Who's Joining the Cast?
Alongside Moore, the cast includes Ronen Rubinstein (from 9-1-1: Lone Star) as Jude Callan, Freddy Miyares as Ethan Cole, Zyra Gorecki as Cassidy Han, Adain Bradley as Malik Henderson, and Lucy Barrett as Samantha "Sammy" Bishop. This mix of fresh talent and established actors should bring plenty of chemistry to the screen.
From Cancellation to Renewal
The original S.W.A.T. series faced three cancellations, with the final one ending the show in May 2025 after an eight-season run. The Season 8 finale left some fans wanting more, but the spin-off offers a new lease on life for the franchise. While the original series was an Emmy-nominated procedural, S.W.A.T. Season 1 of S.W.A.T. Exiles wrapped filming back in February, and production on Season 2 is expected to begin in a few months.
