When it comes to iconic superhero castings, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is right up there with Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. A decade after the Merc with a Mouth got his own solo movie, Reynolds is still the face of one of Marvel's most beloved characters. But despite Deadpool & Wolverine smashing box office records with over $1.3 billion worldwide, the actor isn't rushing to dive back into the red suit.
In a recent chat with Collider while promoting Season 5 of his FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham (premiering May 14 on Disney+ and Hulu), Reynolds offered a candid update on Deadpool's place in the MCU. He confirmed he's been in regular talks with Marvel Studios, but he's taking a measured approach to the character's next chapter.
“I've talked to Marvel off and on, always. We have a really great relationship,” Reynolds said. “It's always a conversation. I'm always just looking to be additive and help on anything, even if it's not a movie I'm in. And I'm always writing. I mean, it's how I kind of get it out of my system.”
Reynolds revealed he has “a few things written that I love” for Deadpool, but he's in no rush to bring them to the screen. “I'm not in any huge rush right now to do anything,” he explained. “Deadpool works best on both scarcity and surprise, so jumping right back into it full on right now is probably something I'm not going to do.”
This cautious approach comes as Marvel gears up for Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters December 18. While it's unclear if Reynolds' Deadpool or Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will appear, the film is already packed with mutants. Marvel has confirmed Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn will reprise their roles as Magneto, Professor X, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Mystique. Channing Tatum, who finally debuted as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, is also set to return. Even Namor (Tenoch Huerta) from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is on the roster.
Reynolds praised Marvel CEO Kevin Feige and the team, saying, “I gotta say, that Marvel team, those guys have been incredible, all of them, and I'm really, really lucky to have the opportunity to work with them the way I have, as intimately as I have.”
For fans hoping to see Deadpool suit up again soon, Reynolds' comments suggest patience is key. The actor seems content to let the character marinate, ensuring any return feels special. In the meantime, you can catch him in Welcome to Wrexham Season 5, and if you're curious about his other work, check out Ryan Reynolds' Unhinged Horror Crime Thriller 'The Voices' Hits Free Streaming in May 2026.
As the MCU continues to evolve, Deadpool's future remains one of its most intriguing mysteries. Whether he pops up in Avengers: Doomsday or headlines a new solo adventure, Reynolds is keeping his cards close to his chest—and that's exactly how he wants it.
