Just in time for the upcoming fifth season of Welcome to Wrexham, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have teamed up for a hilarious new advertisement that blends soccer fandom with genealogy. The spot, created for Ancestry.com, sees the co-owners of Wrexham AFC promoting the website's DNA testing kits—but with a twist that only these two could pull off.
In the ad, Reynolds and Mac are at the Wrexham Training Academy, admiring the team's kits (the uniforms, not the young players). Reynolds enthusiastically pitches Ancestry.com, explaining how he traced his lineage back to a centuries-old ancestor named Innocent George—a name he finds absolutely hilarious. Mac briefly gets caught up in the fantasy, imagining himself as Innocent George, complete with a powdered wig and a churchwarden pipe. He muses that one day, he will have a descendant who is "a profound ****." But when he snaps back to reality, Reynolds scolds him for daydreaming without permission. The ad cheekily highlights Mac's solo time-travel adventure, a nod to the duo's playful dynamic.
Fans can explore their own family history at Ancestry.com/wrexham, where a limited edition bundle is available: a Wrexham-branded DNA testing kit paired with a supporters' scarf. It's a clever crossover that ties the show's themes of community and heritage directly to the streaming service's offerings.
What Is Welcome to Wrexham About?
In late 2020, Reynolds and Mac (formerly Rob McElhenney) purchased a controlling interest in Wrexham AFC, the third-oldest continuously operating football club in the world. The Welsh team had fallen on hard times due to mismanagement and fan alienation. Their journey as owners was captured in the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which airs on FX—the longtime home of Mac's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The series has been a critical and ratings success, earning several Creative Arts Emmys and a renewal through 2029. The show also spawned a spin-off, Necaxa, which follows Club Necaxa, a Mexican soccer team. That series stars Reynolds, Mac, and Eva Longoria, who led a group that took control of the team in 2021. It premiered last year on FXX.
Season 5 of Welcome to Wrexham premieres on FX on May 14. For more updates on the series and its stars, stay tuned to ShowtimeSpot.
