Get ready to return to the Colosseum, because Ridley Scott's long-awaited sequel, Gladiator II, is finally making its streaming debut on Netflix this October. The film, which hit theaters to mixed but passionate reactions, will be available to subscribers starting October 21, 2026. It's a major get for the platform, especially given the star power and the legacy of the original 2000 classic.
Set years after the events of the first film, Gladiator II follows Lucius (Paul Mescal), who is thrust into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat just like his predecessor, Maximus. The cast is stacked: Pedro Pascal plays General Marcus Acacius, Denzel Washington brings his gravitas to Macrinus, Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla, and Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger portray the co-emperors Geta and Caracalla. It's a ensemble that promises both spectacle and dramatic weight.
But not everyone is cheering. Russell Crowe, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Maximus in the original, has been openly critical of the sequel. In a recent interview, Crowe described the film as a cautionary tale about misunderstanding what made the first movie so special. "I think the recent sequel that, you know, we don't have to name out loud is a really unfortunate example of even the people in that engine room not actually understanding what made the first one special," he said. "It wasn't the pomp. It wasn't the circumstance. It wasn't the action. It was the moral core."
Crowe elaborated on the daily battles he had with Scott on the set of the original to keep Maximus's moral compass intact. "The thing is, there was a daily fight on that set. It was a daily fight to keep that moral core of the character. The amount of times they suggested sex scenes and stuff like that for Maximus, it's like you're taking away his power," he revealed. He argued that studio pressure to make Maximus more "blockbuster-friendly" would have undermined the character's foundation. "So you're saying at the same time he had this relationship with his wife, he was fucking this other girl? What are you talking about? It's crazy."
Despite the controversy, Gladiator II is poised to be a streaming hit. Netflix has a track record of boosting films with epic scope, and this one fits the bill. If you're in the mood for more sword-and-sandal action, you might also want to check out Blade Runner 2049's streaming surge or explore Netflix's best adventure series for more thrills.
Whether you agree with Crowe or are simply curious to see Mescal take up the mantle, Gladiator II is sure to spark conversation when it lands on Netflix. Mark your calendars for October 21, and prepare for a return to the arena.
