More than two decades after Anne Hathaway first charmed audiences as Mia Thermopolis, the long-awaited Princess Diaries 3 is still in the works—but it's hitting some royal roadblocks. In a candid new interview, Hathaway revealed that the sequel's script has been completely overhauled, even after the team thought they had cracked the story.
Speaking on SiriusXM's Radio Andy, the actress shared that while progress is being made, it hasn't been smooth sailing. “I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make Princess Diaries 3,” she said. “I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
This creative reset means fans will have to wait a bit longer for Mia's return to Genovia. But the silver lining? Disney is clearly prioritizing quality over speed, ensuring the third installment lives up to the beloved franchise's legacy. Director Adele Lim has previously expressed enthusiasm for the project, and Hathaway has confirmed she's still attached to star.
The original Princess Diaries premiered in 2001, introducing us to the awkward teenager who discovers she's the heir to a European throne. Its 2004 sequel, Royal Engagement, not only expanded the kingdom but also launched Chris Pine's Hollywood career. Together, the two films grossed over $300 million worldwide and remain among Disney's most cherished post-90s titles.
While Hathaway is locked in for the third film, Julie Andrews and Chris Pine have both expressed interest in reprising their roles, though neither has officially signed on. No release date has been announced yet, but with the script now on a new path, the royal comeback is inching closer.
In other Disney news, the studio is also working on a new Princess Tiana movie penned by Colman Domingo, and a Mickey Mouse Club reboot is heading to Disney+. For now, though, all eyes are on Genovia—and whether Mia will finally get her happily ever after.
