The team behind last year's surprise indie hit Primitive War is saddling up for a wild new adventure. Director Luke Sparke and artist Shaun Keenan have unveiled Dinosaurs of the Wild West, a bold project that imagines the American frontier where cowboys and dinosaurs coexist. An exclusive teaser shows a cowboy mounted on a feathered raptor, leading a caravan of prehistoric beasts across a barren desert landscape.
The project aims to launch an ambitious cinematic universe set in a world where humans and dinosaurs have lived side by side for generations. To bring this vision to life, Sparke and Keenan are turning to Kickstarter, with the campaign set to go live on July 7 and run for just 30 days. Backers can snag exclusive rewards, including a 1:18 scale action figure of a raptor and rider produced in partnership with Creative Beast Studios.
What Is Primitive War About?
For those who missed the original, Primitive War is set in 1968 and follows Vulture Squad, a long-range reconnaissance unit led by Ryan Baker (Ryan Kwanten). They're dispatched by Colonel Jericho (Jeremy Piven) to find a missing company of Green Berets. But the jungles of Vietnam hold a terrifying secret: dinosaurs. The squad soon clashes with a Soviet team, the Dogs of War, and discovers that a Soviet wormhole experiment accidentally opened a portal to the distant past, releasing prehistoric predators into the modern world. With the help of scientist Sofia Wagner (Tricia Helfer), the Vultures must destroy the portal before the deranged General Borodin (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) uses its power to annihilate the planet.
Based on Ethan Pettus' novel, Primitive War became a sleeper hit on streaming, and a sequel is already in development. The success has paved the way for Sparke and Keenan to explore a new frontier—literally.
Dinosaurs Meet the Wild West
Dinosaurs of the Wild West takes the concept of humans coexisting with dinosaurs and transplants it to the 19th-century American frontier. The teaser imagery evokes a world where cowboys tame raptors instead of horses, and dinosaur caravans cross the dusty plains. It's a fresh twist on the Western genre, blending the grit of the Old West with the awe of prehistoric creatures.
Fans of Westerns and sci-fi alike will find plenty to love. For a taste of classic Western storytelling, you can stream 'High Noon' free on Pluto TV this July 2026, a film that changed the genre. And if you're curious about how modern Westerns are evolving, Prime Video's sci-fi Western 'Fallout' dominated streaming in June 2026.
How to Get Involved
The Kickstarter for Dinosaurs of the Wild West launches July 7 and will only be open for 30 days. Backers can pledge to secure the raptor-and-rider action figure, a collectible that's exclusive to the campaign. To stay updated, sign up on Kickstarter.com and be among the first to know when the project goes live. As the team puts it, you'd better hurry before it goes extinct.
