Hot on the heels of The Penguin's success, DC Studios is planting new seeds in Gotham's dark soil. Lauren LeFranc, the creative force behind HBO's hit crime saga, is set to executive produce a brand-new series centered on one of Batman's most alluring and dangerous foes: Poison Ivy.
News of the project broke via Deadline, confirming that LeFranc will shepherd the development of the show, though she won't be writing it. The studio is currently searching for a writing staff and a lead actor to bring Dr. Pamela Isley to life. This marks another major expansion of the Batman universe on the small screen, following the acclaimed The Penguin and the upcoming Clayface film, which is already generating buzz for its fresh take on Gotham's underworld.
LeFranc's pedigree in genre television is impressive. Before The Penguin, she wrote for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and created the sci-fi series Impulse, about a teen with teleportation powers. Her work on The Penguin—which starred Colin Farrell as the disfigured gangster Oswald Cobb—earned critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase, proving that even the most twisted corners of Gotham can yield compelling drama.
Interestingly, this new Poison Ivy series will not be tied to Matt Reeves' The Batman universe, unlike The Penguin. That means it could exist within the new DCU, the interconnected franchise that includes Superman, Lanterns, and the upcoming Clayface movie. However, DC Studios has yet to confirm exactly where this story fits, leaving fans to speculate.
Who Is Poison Ivy?
First introduced in 1966's Batman #181 by Sheldon Moldoff, Robert Kanigher, and Carmine Infantino, Poison Ivy started as a classic femme fatale but evolved into a brilliant botanist and eco-terrorist. Dr. Pamela Isley's biochemistry was altered in a lab accident, granting her the ability to communicate with plants, control vegetation, and produce toxins that can poison or mind-control anyone she touches. She's also famously linked romantically to Harley Quinn, another of Batman's iconic adversaries.
On screen, Poison Ivy has been portrayed by Uma Thurman in the 1997 film Batman & Robin, and by a trio of actresses—Clare Foley, Maggie Geha, and Peyton List—on the TV series Gotham. In animation, she was voiced by Diane Pershing in the beloved Batman: The Animated Series and by Lake Bell in the adult animated comedy Harley Quinn.
With LeFranc at the helm, fans can expect a grounded, gritty take on the character, similar to how The Penguin reimagined Oswald Cobblepot as a ruthless mobster. The series is still in early development, so no release date has been announced. Stay tuned for more updates as this project takes root.
