Pierce Brosnan, the Irish actor who famously traded his Walther PPK for a climbing harness, is set to headline a remake of the 1993 Sylvester Stallone action hit Cliffhanger. But just as the film was poised to scale new heights, a major setback has thrown its summer release into question.
Originally slated for a wide theatrical rollout on August 28, 2026, the survival thriller was expected to compete with heavyweights like Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars, Jason Statham's Mutiny, and Anne Hathaway's The End of Oak Street. However, according to Deadline, distributor Row K has hit financial turbulence and is now in talks with Tom Quinn's NEON to co-release the film. The shift could push Cliffhanger into the first quarter of 2027.
For Brosnan, who has effortlessly reinvented himself as a charismatic leading man for sophisticated older characters, this remake represents a chance to launch a new action franchise. The original Cliffhanger was a massive blockbuster, grossing $255 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. Stallone, who also co-wrote the screenplay, is not involved in this iteration. Instead, the script comes from Sascha Penn and Mark Bianculli, with Jaume Collet-Serra (Carry-On) directing. Lily James (Pam & Tommy) co-stars.
What Is the New Cliffhanger About?
The remake tells a fresh story, separate from the original. Brosnan plays Ray Cooper, a seasoned mountain climber who now runs a luxury resort in the Dolomites with his daughter Sydney. When the son of a billionaire arrives for a weekend getaway, the group becomes the target of a violent kidnapping plot. Ray's other daughter, Naomi (James), witnesses the attack but escapes. To save her family, she must overcome severe acrophobia triggered by a past tragedy.
The film's move to NEON would be a notable shift for the distributor, best known for its arthouse and horror titles. But given NEON's track record of turning smaller films into breakout hits, Cliffhanger may have found a safe landing. It will be interesting to see what viral marketing strategy NEON employs for this high-altitude thriller.
