Season 1 introduced us to the parents of Claire and Jamie Fraser, showing how their own love stories unfolded against the backdrop of 18th-century Scotland and World War I. As Season 2 approaches, here’s everything you need to remember to dive back into this tangled web of passion and intrigue.
Ellen and Brian: A Love Forged in Enmity
In 1714, the death of Red Jacob MacKenzie throws Clan MacKenzie into chaos. His sons, Colum and Dougal, clash over leadership, but their sister Ellen suggests a clever compromise: Colum rules in peace, Dougal in war. The brothers agree, yet they still resent Ellen for the affection their father never gave them.
At a clan gathering, Ellen meets Brian Fraser—a spy from the rival Fraser clan. Despite being enemies, they’re instantly drawn to each other. Their secret meetings lead to a handfasting and a passionate consummation, but their happiness is short-lived. Colum, desperate to secure an alliance, arranges Ellen’s marriage to Malcolm Grant. Ellen publicly pretends to accept, but privately she’s determined to be with Brian. Meanwhile, Murtagh, Brian’s cousin, nurses his own unrequited love for Ellen, and a heartbroken kiss with Ellen’s sister Jocasta only complicates things further.
Julia and Henry: A Love Across Time
In 1917, Julia Moriston works in London’s censorship office, where she becomes captivated by letters from a soldier named Henry Beauchamp. They fall in love sight unseen and marry at the first opportunity. Years later, a car accident—the same one Claire believes killed her parents—sends them hurtling through the standing stones back to 1714.
But they’re separated upon arrival. Julia is sold to Lord Lovat as a servant, while Henry is forced to become a bladier for the Grants. Henry searches for Julia for months, but a cruel lie convinces him she died in childbirth. Grief and PTSD lead him into the arms of a local woman, Seema, though he hallucinates that he’s with Julia. Meanwhile, Julia, pregnant and desperate, accepts Lovat’s advances to protect her unborn child, hoping he’ll believe the baby is his. Lovat, hungry for power, sees a seer’s prophecy that “his” son will become Scotland’s king—and he’ll do anything to make that happen.
Cliffhangers That Set Up Season 2
Season 1 ends on two major cliffhangers. The Frasers try to stop Lovat from marrying Julia, since a king must be legitimate, but Lovat backdates the marriage registry. He also spreads rumors that Ellen slept with another man, forcing the Grants to demand a virginity test. Brian and Julia rush to Castle Leoch to help Ellen, and Julia brings a medicinal trick to fool the examiners. Henry and Julia finally reunite, but they can’t escape without the help of the compassionate Ned Gowan.
