For fans of The Vampire Diaries, the on-screen chemistry between Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley was legendary. Now, a decade after the show wrapped, the duo is finally reuniting for a new mystery series at Hulu called You Deserve to Know. And according to Dobrev, this wasn't a random casting coincidence—it was a carefully orchestrated plan years in the making.
In a recent interview promoting her new film The Get Out, Dobrev opened up about how she and Wesley have been secretly working toward a reunion since the Vampire Diaries finale in 2017. “We have been plotting this behind the scenes for many years now, to be completely honest with you,” she said. “Paul and I have been wanting to… We're really close, and we spend a lot of time together, and we have since the show ended, and we've talked about wanting to find the right thing.”
The series is based on Aggie Blum Thompson's 2025 novel of the same name, which follows three suburban couples whose tight-knit friendship is shattered when one of the husbands is murdered. Dobrev plays Gwen, the widow who must navigate whether she can trust her friends or if their bond is crumbling under the weight of hidden secrets. Wesley plays Scott, a neighbor on the opposite side of the murder investigation, setting the stage for a tense, dramatic collision.
Dobrev emphasized that she and Wesley were determined not to reunite just for nostalgia's sake. “We didn't want to reunite just for the sake of reuniting for nostalgia's sake,” she explained. “We really wanted it to be something that we both were really excited about that was elevated and different than the show, but also pays tribute in some way to the show as well, but with a fresh take and reflects who we are as people, as artists now 10 years later.”
The project came together after Wesley read the book first and immediately called Dobrev, urging her to dive in. “He kept on me — it was so annoying, to be honest with you — to read it,” she laughed. Once she did, she finished it in a day or two and agreed it was the perfect next step. From there, they assembled a team, including writer Brian Tanen (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives), and production companies Unwell and Kapital Entertainment.
Both Dobrev and Wesley are also executive producing the series, giving them creative control from the ground up. “Not just as actors, but also that we're executive producing it, and we're bringing the story to life from both sides of the camera is extra exciting and special,” Dobrev said.
While fans wait for You Deserve to Know, Dobrev is currently starring in the thriller The Get Out alongside Aaron Paul and Russell Crowe. The film follows a nightclub owner trying to retire, only to be targeted by masked robbers and ruthless cartels.
