Sherlock Holmes continues to be a wellspring of inspiration for storytellers, and Netflix is adding another intriguing chapter to the detective's legacy. The streaming giant has officially set a premiere date for The Final Problem, a four-episode murder mystery that puts a fresh spin on the classic character.
Set in the spring of 1959, the series follows Basil (Jose Coronado), a retired actor who once portrayed Sherlock Holmes on the big screen. When a violent storm strands thirteen people on a remote island near Mallorca, a seemingly peaceful retreat turns deadly. An English tourist is found dead, and what initially looks like a suicide quickly unravels into something far more sinister: a murder.
With no way off the island and no outside help arriving, the guests are trapped with a killer in their midst. While Basil is reluctant to step into the detective role again, his past as the famed on-screen sleuth makes him the most qualified to uncover the truth. As the story unfolds, a web of secrets, motives, and lies emerges, turning the series into a tense, classic whodunit.
The show is adapted from Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte's novel of the same name, with a writing team of Alberto Macías, Carlos Molinero, and Marisol Farré, and direction by Félix Viscarret. Alongside Coronado, the cast includes María Valverde, Martiño Rivas, Maribel Verdú, Gonzalo de Castro, Cristina Kovani, José Condessa, and Pepón Nieto.
Netflix has been leaning into Holmes-adjacent stories lately, from the Enola Holmes films to other mystery-driven series. The Final Problem offers a more mature, atmospheric take, blending period drama with suspense. For fans of classic murder mysteries, this could be a compelling addition to your watchlist.
All four episodes of The Final Problem will drop on Netflix on Friday, September 25. If you're looking for more hidden gems to binge, check out our list of Netflix gems that deserve a second look.
