Netflix is diving headfirst into the world of hockey romance with a new series adaptation of Hannah Grace's bestselling novel Icebreaker. The streaming giant announced the project at the Banff World Media Festival, signaling a major play for fans of the genre that has already scored big with hits like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus.
The series will be showrun by Amanda Lasher, whose credits include Gossip Girl, Riverdale, and With Love. Lasher, who started her career as James Mangold's assistant on Cop Land, brings a passion for steamy storytelling. "I have been a fan of steamy YA since the 7th grade; reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a text book," she said. She'll co-write the series with Jade Bartlett, who recently wrote and directed the Jenna Ortega erotic thriller Miller's Girl. Bartlett praised the novel for its "ambitious, talented, and undeniably sexy characters" and noted that "the real special sauce is that, above all, they are good, deeply compassionate people...and we cannot get enough of them."
What Is 'Icebreaker' About?
The story follows Anastasia Allen, a figure skater who transfers to the University of California, Maple Hills, and Nate Hawkins, the campus's biggest hockey star with his eyes on the NHL. When an accident forces the hockey and figure skating teams to share a practice rink, sparks fly—much like the classic D.B. Sweeney-Moira Kelly film The Cutting Edge. Grace's novel spent 70 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into 24 languages. It's the first in the Maple Hills series, which also includes Wildfire and Daydream, following other students' romantic adventures. Netflix is likely eyeing those sequels if Icebreaker proves a hit.
The series is a production of Unwell Productions, with executive producers including Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Meena Lefevre, alongside Lasher and Bartlett. The announcement comes as Netflix continues to capitalize on the BookTok phenomenon, which has turned hockey romance into a streaming powerhouse.
