For six long years, NCIS fans watched the show dance around one of its most beloved characters, Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). After her departure in Season 11, the series kept her memory alive through constant references, flashbacks, and plotlines that hinted at her fate. But what viewers truly craved—Ziva herself—remained frustratingly out of reach.
That all changed with the Season 16 finale, titled "Daughters." In its final moments, the episode revealed that Ziva was alive, shattering the assumption of her death and finally giving the franchise a chance to bring her back into the fold. After six years of Ziva existing in the past tense, NCIS let her step back into the present.
Ziva David's Six-Year Ghost Story
De Pablo's exit was a seismic shift for NCIS. Ziva had been a cornerstone since Season 3, known for her fierce skills and her complicated, deeply felt relationship with Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly). Her final episode as a regular, "Past, Present, and Future" (Season 11, Episode 2), aired on October 1, 2013, and felt like a definitive goodbye. Tony even flew to Israel hoping to bring her back, but Ziva chose to stay, leaving her story—and their relationship—in a state of unresolved tension.
In the seasons that followed, the show couldn't quite let her go. Ziva was repeatedly name-dropped, her bond with Tony remained a key part of the series' mythology, and the revelation that they had a daughter, Tali, added a new layer. Then, in Season 13, the team learned that Ziva had apparently been killed in an attack on her farmhouse, seemingly closing the book for good.
But by Season 16, that supposed death felt more like a question mark than a period. Eleanor Bishop (Emily Wickersham) uncovered evidence suggesting Ziva might still be alive, and "Daughters" finally confirmed it. In the episode's closing scene, Ziva appeared in Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) basement, delivering a cliffhanger that NCIS had carefully avoided for years: she was alive, and she was coming back.
NCIS Finally Puts Ziva Back in the Picture
"Daughters" was a milestone because it ended the show's six-year dance around Ziva's fate. It turned out Ziva had faked her death after the farmhouse attack, going undercover to hunt down those responsible while keeping Tali safe. Tony, meanwhile, had left NCIS to raise their daughter. Ziva's return gave the show a chance to repair an ending that had left both characters' stories hanging in an awkward limbo.
De Pablo had previously said she wanted Ziva's return to have real substance, not just a cameo. Her 2019 comeback delivered that, giving the character agency over her own ending—something her original departure never quite managed. For years, Ziva had been defined by what happened to her: she left, she was presumed dead, her daughter was sent to Tony, and her colleagues mourned her. Bringing her back let her make choices again.
Ziva's Return Came With One Last Twist
But Ziva's return didn't mean an instant reunion. She appeared in four episodes of Season 17—"Out of the Darkness," "Into the Light," "The North Pole," and "In the Wind"—as she teamed up with Gibbs and the team to eliminate the threat against her family. Once the villain Sahar was defeated, Ziva was free to go to Paris and reunite with Tony and Tali. Instead, "In the Wind" threw one final obstacle in her path when Gibbs' young neighbor, Phineas (Jack Fisher), disappeared.
Ziva stayed to help find him, partly because she understood what it meant for a child to lose a parent. But a more personal fear lurked beneath her hesitation: after everything she'd endured, Ziva wasn't sure Tali would remember her or that she could simply step back into her old life as if nothing had happened.
Tony's video message from Tali finally gave her the reassurance she needed. After Phineas was found, Ziva left for Paris, with Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) escorting her to the airport. Her final physical appearance on the flagship series came in "In the Wind," which aired January 7, 2020. After that, Ziva appeared only through archive footage, photographs, or references on NCIS until her story eventually continued in Tony & Ziva.
This long-awaited return not only satisfied longtime fans but also set the stage for a new chapter, proving that even after six years, Ziva David's story was far from over.
