The Gundam universe is expanding in a bold new direction. At San Diego Comic-Con, Bandai Namco unveiled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a fresh anime series set to debut in 2027. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim), this series marks the beginning of the ambitious RG Project, which also includes a video game tie-in.
Kamiyama, known for his work on Star Wars: Visions (the short The Ninth Jedi is being expanded into a full series), brings his signature style to this new Gundam timeline. The story takes place after humanity expanded beyond the solar system, discovering technology that ushered in an era of peace. But that golden age was shattered by an unstoppable interstellar force that rendered Earth uninhabitable. Survivors now cling to life on the Moon and offworld colonies.
Forty-five years after the apocalypse, a new hero emerges: Azumi Ray, who pilots the anti-apocalypse Gundam ZERO mobile suit. This is a completely original timeline, separate from the Universal Century or any previous Gundam continuity, offering a fresh entry point for both longtime fans and newcomers.
The RG Project doesn't stop with the anime. A video game, Gundam: Rogue Orbit, is also in development, set in the same universe but 100 years after the events of RG XARX-ZERO. It promises an immersive cockpit experience that will let players pilot mobile suits like never before. Both the anime and game are slated for a 2027 release.
This announcement comes amid a busy period for the Gundam franchise. The live-action Gundam movie for Netflix, starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, is still in the works. Meanwhile, recent anime hits like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury tackled corporate greed, and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX explored an alternate history where Zeon won. The theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe (sequel to Hathaway) hit theaters earlier this year, with a third film completing that trilogy.
