Michael Fassbender is trading his spy gear for something far more sinister. The Black Bag and The Agency star is heading back to the sci-fi realm with Hope, a South Korean alien thriller that has finally locked in its U.S. theatrical release date: September 9, 2026.
This marks Fassbender's first foray into alien territory since Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant in 2017, but don't expect a heroic return. In Hope, the German-Irish actor plays the primary antagonist—a terrifying alien predator—alongside his real-life wife, Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina). The couple's last on-screen pairing was in 2016's The Light Between Oceans.
What Is 'Hope' About?
Set in the remote village of Hope Harbour near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, the film follows a community terrorized by what locals initially believe is a tiger. As authorities dig deeper, they uncover a far more horrifying truth: the village is under siege by alien predators, portrayed by Fassbender and Vikander. The film blends monster-movie thrills with a distinctly Korean setting and mythology.
Written and directed by Na Hong-jin—the acclaimed filmmaker behind the cult horror hit The Wailing—Hope premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. It earned strong reviews and a seven-minute standing ovation. The film currently holds an 82% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider's Theresa Lacson calling it one of the most exciting films from this year's Cannes.
Box Office Buzz and Record-Breaking Sales
Hope has already made history as the highest-grossing overseas pre-sales title ever for a Korean film, securing distribution in more than 200 territories. International sales have recouped roughly half of its production budget before its U.S. release. NEON acquired the film for American distribution, setting the stage for a fall debut.
Na Hong-jin has also revealed he has a sequel concept ready, should the film perform well enough to warrant a follow-up. Given the early buzz and Fassbender's star power, that seems like a strong possibility.
