After a long wait, Matthew McConaughey's highly anticipated neo-Western The Rivals of Amziah King has finally locked in a theatrical release date. Black Bear dropped the first official trailer today, confirming that the film will arrive in theaters worldwide on August 14, 2026.

The movie has been generating buzz since its premiere at SXSW last year, where it earned a stellar 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 31 reviews. Some critics are already calling it one of McConaughey's best performances. The film wrapped production back in early 2023 but has been stuck in distribution limbo until now.

McConaughey stars as Amziah King, a charismatic and musically gifted man who leads a bluegrass band of misfits while running the premier honey-making operation in rural Oklahoma. When his estranged foster daughter unexpectedly returns, he sees a chance to reconnect and build a family business. But the honey game is cutthroat, and rivals are determined to destroy everything he has built.

The cast is stacked with talent, including Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori, and Owen Teague. The script was co-written by James Montague and Andrew Patterson, with Patterson also directing. This marks Patterson's second feature film, following his acclaimed 2019 debut The Vast of Night.

2026 has been relatively quiet for McConaughey, but he made a big comeback in 2025 with The Lost Bus, an Apple TV+ thriller directed by Paul Greengrass. That film marked his first leading role in over five years, since 2019's The Gentlemen. He's also set to star in the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series Brothers alongside Woody Harrelson, which will give fans the True Detective reunion they've been waiting for.
