For years, Marvel fans have been howling for more of Werewolf by Night, the studio's stylish and spooky special presentation that dropped in 2022. Now, Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum has finally broken his silence, offering a glimmer of hope for a follow-up.
In a recent chat with ComicBook, Winderbaum, who oversees Marvel's streaming and television output, admitted that a sequel is high on his personal wish list. "One-shots and the special presentations get to do the same thing, which is like, find a weird corner of the universe," he explained. "I love Werewolf by Night. I really want to make a Werewolf by Night Season 2 or Part Two: if Disney will let me."
He added, "So now you know. We'll see. You never know. It's like everything has to go into development and find its footing. But certainly, I want to make more."
The original special, directed by Michael Giacchino and written by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron, starred Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a monster hunter with a lycanthropic secret. It followed a secret society of monster hunters competing for a powerful relic while battling a deadly creature. Giacchino's black-and-white cinematography, practical effects, and eerie score gave it a distinct, old-school horror vibe that resonated with both critics and audiences.
The special earned rave reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 90% from critics and 88% from audiences. Bernal's performance and Laura Donnelly's turn as Elsa Bloodstone were particularly praised, making the special a standout in the MCU's growing horror corner.
That corner has expanded in recent years with projects like What If…?'s zombie episode, which spawned the upcoming Marvel Zombies series, and Agatha All Along, the witchy WandaVision spin-off that became a fan favorite. Doctor Strange and its sequel also dipped into darker, multiversal horror territory, while Moon Knight explored psychological and supernatural themes with a gritty edge.
But Werewolf by Night remains the most beloved horror entry, and fans have been clamoring for more ever since. Winderbaum's comments suggest that the door isn't closed, though nothing is officially in development yet. "Everything has to go into development and find its footing," he said, hinting that a sequel could happen if the right creative spark ignites.
For now, fans can revisit the original special on Disney+. And while we wait for any official announcement, there's plenty of other horror goodness to explore—like the best horror movies based on books or the horror video games that redefined fear.
Stay tuned for more updates on Werewolf by Night and other Marvel projects. If Winderbaum gets his way, we might just see Jack Russell return to the screen sooner rather than later.
