The season finale of Marshals, titled “Wolves at the Door,” left fans reeling after an assassination attempt on Thomas Rainwater forces Kayce Dutton to bring the danger home. As the team races to uncover who’s behind the attack, Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) and Belle (Arielle Kebbel) find themselves staring down a shotgun barrel in a cliffhanger that won’t be resolved until Season 2.
In an exclusive interview, Marshall-Green opened up about the finale’s brutal twist, Cal’s journey of redemption, and what’s in store for the show’s return. “The show really did start in a certain direction, but if you kept watching, you quickly realized we’re moving at a much different tempo and direction now,” he said.
Cal’s Redemption Arc
Throughout Season 1, Cal has been haunted by his past, but the finale finds him in a better place—sort of. “I think there are a few moments of redemption for him—with his daughter, with Kayce, and with Double G,” Marshall-Green explained. “Just when you see Cal smile and find some peace with someone else, in this case Belle, he gets a shotgun in his face.”
The latter half of the season delved into the team’s backstory, including the Four Musketeers and the secret Cal kept for Double G’s benefit. “Kayce was led astray by Cal holding onto this secret,” Marshall-Green noted. “Knowing he had to be strong so Double G could survive really shows Cal’s hutzpah and his ability to lead a team through whatever gantlet it is.”
Double G’s Legacy
Though Double G (Riley Green) is gone, his presence will be felt in Season 2. “You will definitely feel Double G’s spirit on this show in Season 2,” Marshall-Green teased. “With his passing, he’s relieved of a lot of his own demons and finally finds some peace, albeit in the worst way.”
The actor also revealed a poignant moment he fought to keep in the finale—a final fist bump between Cal and Double G. “It was written, but we were moving quickly past it. I don’t know if it made the cut, but it was important to me.”
A Massive Season 2 Premiere
Marshall-Green promised a “massive” Season 2 premiere that will pick up right where the cliffhanger left off. “We’re going to hit the ground running,” he said. “The stakes are higher than ever, and the team’s fractured future hangs in the balance.”
For fans of the Taylor Sheridan's 'Marshals' Defies Critics, Dominates Paramount+ Global Charts Ahead of Season 2, the show’s evolution has been a highlight. “It’s a different show at this point,” Marshall-Green admitted. “We’re moving at a much different tempo and direction now.”
As for the cliffhanger, Marshall-Green is a fan. “I love a good cliffhanger,” he said. “It keeps people talking, and it sets up a huge Season 2.”
In addition to Marshals, Marshall-Green is set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. “Working with Nolan is a dream,” he shared. “The scale of that production is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”
With Yellowstone Franchise Keeps Riding High: 'Marshals' and 'Dutton Ranch' Dominate Streaming, the future looks bright for the series. “We’re just getting started,” Marshall-Green promised.
