Markiplier's indie sci-fi horror sensation Iron Lung is finally coming home. The YouTuber-turned-filmmaker announced that his breakout movie will be available for digital purchase and rental starting May 31, 2026, exclusively on YouTube. This marks a new chapter for the film, which shattered box office expectations with its unconventional release strategy.
Written, directed, and starring Mark Fischbach (better known as Markiplier), Iron Lung follows Simon, a convict sent on a desperate mission to pilot a submersible called the "Iron Lung" through an ocean of blood on a distant moon. The film's claustrophobic tension and minimalist sci-fi horror struck a chord with audiences, earning an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes despite a more mixed 62% critics' score.
What made Iron Lung a phenomenon wasn't just its story—it was how it reached theaters. The indie film was released globally to over 4,000 screens without a traditional distributor. Initially planned as a limited North American run, a massive fan campaign pushed it into theaters across Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The result? A staggering $51 million worldwide box office haul—17 times its reported $3 million budget.
Now Fischbach is rewriting the distribution playbook again. By releasing Iron Lung directly on YouTube, he's bypassing traditional digital platforms entirely. During a panel at Cannes, he called YouTube his "home," and in a recent video, he explained that self-releasing on the platform that launched his career felt natural. He's working directly with YouTube to make independent distribution a reality for creators.
Fans hoping for a physical copy will have to wait a bit longer. Fischbach has confirmed plans for a physical home release, but no date has been announced yet.
What to Watch If You Like 'Iron Lung'
If you're counting down the days until May 31, there are other creator-driven projects worth exploring. The Philippou brothers (aka RackaRacka) made waves with Talk To Me, an A24 horror hit that grossed over $92 million. The film follows a group of teens who use a severed embalmed hand to communicate with spirits—with terrifying consequences.
For a bigger-budget take on similar themes, check out Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling as a lone astronaut on a mission to save the sun. Fans have compared it to Iron Lung, calling one a story of despair and the other a story of hope. Both explore isolation and survival in the vast unknown.
