Maika Monroe, fresh off her chilling turn in the 2024 horror hit Longlegs, is about to unleash a new kind of madness. Bleecker Street has dropped the first trailer for Victorian Psycho, a gothic horror thriller set in the 1850s that promises plenty of blood, hysteria, and unsettling behavior.
The film stars Monroe as Winfred Notty, an eccentric young governess who arrives at the remote manor Ensor House in 1858. As she settles in, staff members begin to vanish without explanation, and the owners start to wonder if their new hire is hiding something sinister. The trailer offers a glimpse of Monroe's unhinged performance, complete with wide-eyed stares, violent outbursts, and a growing sense that this governess is far from ordinary.
Joining Monroe are Jason Isaacs and Ruth Wilson. Isaacs, best known to many as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, plays Mr. Pounds. He recently earned his first Emmy nomination for his role in HBO's The White Lotus Season 3, and is also set to star alongside Sophie Turner in Amazon's upcoming Tomb Raider series. Wilson, a two-time Olivier Award winner, adds further gravitas to the cast.
The screenplay for Victorian Psycho was written by Virginia Feito, and the film is directed by Zachary Wigon. Wigon previously helmed the 2022 psychological thriller Sanctuary, starring Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley, which is currently streaming on Hulu. For fans of tense, character-driven horror, this new project looks to be a worthy follow-up.
While an exact release date has not been announced, the trailer confirms that Victorian Psycho will arrive before the end of 2025. The film is produced by Bleecker Street, known for distributing acclaimed genre titles like Longlegs and The Blackcoat's Daughter.
Monroe's career has been on a hot streak since her breakout in It Follows. Her performance in Longlegs alongside Nicolas Cage earned widespread praise, and a sequel to that film is in development, though Cage is the only original star confirmed to return. Victorian Psycho gives Monroe another chance to showcase her range as a scream queen with a dark, comedic edge.
