Change is the only constant in the Law & Order universe, and tonight, another chapter closes. Reid Scott is hanging up his badge as Detective Vincent Riley in the all-new episode "Into the Mystic," airing at 10 p.m. ET on NBC and streaming tomorrow on Peacock. Collider has an exclusive sneak peek that shows Riley in a frantic search for a mysterious figure—a hunt that will ultimately lead to his departure from the series.
Riley joined the squad in Season 23, stepping in for Jeffrey Donovan's Frank Cosgrove as the senior detective. He arrived with baggage: a six-month suspension for punching a superior officer and a battle with alcoholism following his father's death. Last season, in "Fate's Cruel Joke," his squad car struck a pedestrian during a chase, and though the death was ruled accidental, it haunted him. Now, that troubled past catches up with him in a big way.
In the sneak peek, Riley is visibly rattled as he searches for someone—we don't know who or why, but it's clear this mystery will be his swan song. He'll be replaced by Rob Calvino, played by James Badge Dale (The Pacific), so expect a new face in the precinct soon.
"Into the Mystic" also throws a wrench into the case of the week. Riley's partner, Theo Walker (David Ajala), is forced off a murder investigation due to a conflict of interest, and Executive ADA Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) faces the same problem. That leaves Lieutenant Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) and ADA Samantha Maroun (Odelya Halevi) to carry the load. Meanwhile, DA Nicholas Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) is left scrambling when a prosecution witness suddenly changes their story.
While Law & Order says goodbye to one detective, its sister series is planning a long-awaited hello. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will reunite Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) with her original partner, Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), in an upcoming episode. Meloni starred on SVU for its first 12 seasons before headlining the spin-off Law & Order: Organized Crime, which was recently cancelled after five seasons. Fans have been clamoring for a Benson-Stabler reunion, and it looks like they'll finally get it.
For those who love a good father-son crisis, check out this Whalefall sneak peek featuring Josh Brolin and Austin Abrams. And if you're into crime thrillers, Matt Damon's Oscar-winning epic The Departed is leaving HBO Max soon—find out why it's the crime thriller to stream before it's gone.
Don't miss Reid Scott's final bow as Detective Riley in "Into the Mystic," tonight at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. Stay tuned to ShowtimeSpot for more updates on the Law & Order franchise.
