The return of Law & Order for its 26th season on NBC brings a mix of excitement and melancholy. While fans of Dick Wolf's iconic procedural have plenty to anticipate with the fall premiere, it also marks the beginning of the end for Reid Scott's tenure as Senior Detective Vincent Riley. Earlier this year, news broke that Scott would be leaving the series after three seasons, with only a handful of episodes to conclude Riley's storyline before James Badge Dale steps in. But before he says goodbye, he and Detective Walker (David Ajala) have a few more cases to crack.
Season 25 ended with the team taking on a corrupt judge, and Season 26 dives straight into a timely and chaotic case. Titled "Ghost in the Machine," the premiere sends Riley and Walker into the murky world of artificial intelligence after a software engineer is found murdered. It's one of Riley's final mysteries, and it's a grisly one with plenty of suspects, directly confronting the heated debates surrounding AI and the people pushing the technology to its limits. We're thrilled to share an exclusive sneak peek showing the detectives on the scene.
Riley and Walker get the lowdown on the victim, Steven Kelly, as they approach the body on the sand. The killer was strategic, choosing a public spot with no cameras to capture the crime. The suspect also got dangerously close, as Walker notes the gunshot wound to the back of the head. The only witness is a jogger who heard the shot and saw someone fleeing "across the FDR, heading toward Alphabet City" in a blue New York Empires cap. They soon learn Kelly worked for Advanced Alignment, an AI powerhouse comparable to Anthropic or OpenAI. Reid, apparently, isn't a fan of such companies, but for now, they're unsure if this is a disgruntled individual or something more sinister.
Law & Order Tackles AI in Season 26 Premiere
The entire Law & Order team will grapple with AI in some form during the episode. District Attorney Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) is determined to find justice in a groundbreaking case, but he faces the challenge of confronting technology that evolves faster than the law can keep up. Wolf's series has never shied away from hot-button issues, and the premiere aims to hit the heart of the debate over whether AI is a boon or a threat to humanity.
While Scott wraps up his time in the 2-7, the rest of the cast remains intact, with Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi, and Maura Tierney joining Goldwyn and Ajala. The show continues to blend procedural drama with real-world relevance, and this season promises to be no different.
