The first season of HBO's sci-fi detective drama Lanterns wrapped up about a week ago, and while the finale left fans polarized, it also delivered a historic win for the network. The episode, titled "Dirt and Stars," finally cracked the case of Hal Jordan's (Kyle Chandler) murder, exposed Sinestro's (Ulrich Thomsen) true role, and set John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) on a path toward the big screen in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, due in 2027.
Despite the mixed reactions, the finale has shattered records. According to Nielsen and Warner Bros. Discovery, the episode pulled in 7.2 million U.S. viewers and 10.5 million globally within its first three days across all platforms. That's a 9% jump from the premiere's U.S. audience (6.6 million) and a 13% spike globally (from 9.3 million). Even the penultimate episode drew a hefty 7 million U.S. viewers in the same window.
With the premiere now approaching 30 million viewers, Lanterns is averaging 19.3 million global viewers per episode, placing it among the top five HBO series launches ever. The show's success is undeniable, yet HBO has been tight-lipped about a Season 2 renewal, leaving fans on edge.
Co-creator Damon Lindelof, however, offered a glimmer of hope. In a recent interview, he revealed that a writers' room has already been assembled to brainstorm ideas for a potential second season. Lindelof, who won't return as showrunner, said he's staying out of the creative process to give the new writers freedom. "I wouldn't want to hamstring those writers in any way," he explained, adding that he's excited to see how they handle the rich comic book lore, including Hal's multiple deaths and the Parallax storyline.
For fans of the detective genre, Lanterns has been a refreshing take, blending sci-fi with a neo-Western vibe.
