The new Street Fighter movie is tearing up the box office, having already raked in over $57 million worldwide. But fans of the franchise's 1994 live-action predecessor might be wondering if any of the original cast made a surprise appearance. As it turns out, one almost did—and it would have been a massive throwback.
According to a recent interview with Queerty, Orville Peck, who plays Vega in the new film, revealed that the producers were keen to get Kylie Minogue—the Australian pop icon who played Cammy in the 1994 movie—to cameo. The only problem? They couldn't get in touch with her. That's where Peck stepped in, telling the team, "Guys, I can text her."
Minogue was reportedly game, but her busy schedule ultimately made it impossible. She did, however, share some warm words about her time on the original set, calling it "one of the most fun experiences of her life." Peck is still hoping to reunite her with co-star Mel Jarnson for a proper "meeting of the Cammies."
The near-cameo would have been a delightful nod to the 1994 film, which has since become a cult favorite despite its initial critical drubbing. That movie, directed by Die Hard scribe Steven E. de Souza, took a more conventional action approach than the games, with Jean-Claude Van Damme leading an Allied Nations task force against Raul Julia's drug lord M. Bison.
The new film, by contrast, sticks closer to the tournament structure of the games, but it does include a subtle homage to its predecessor. During a showdown with Chun-Li (Callina Liang), David Dastmalchian's M. Bison delivers a paraphrased version of Julia's iconic line: "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was a Tuesday." It's a moment that fans of the original will surely appreciate.
While the new movie doesn't feature any other cameos from the 1994 cast, it's not uncommon for franchises to bring back original stars. Just this summer, Dolph Lundgren popped up in Masters of the Universe, 39 years after playing He-Man. So the door is always open for more surprises.
For now, Street Fighter is in theaters, and fans can only imagine what might have been. If Minogue ever finds a free weekend, maybe we'll get that Cammy reunion after all. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
