When Paramount decided to turn Sega's beloved blue hedgehog into a movie star, they probably didn't expect to strike gold quite this hard. After a rocky start and a brief PR hiccup, the Sonic the Hedgehog films became one of Hollywood's most dependable family-friendly hits. So naturally, they expanded the universe with a spin-off centered on the grumpy, literal-minded echidna: Knuckles. The series dropped on Paramount+ and quickly won over fans, but if you're hoping for a second season, you might want to temper those expectations.

In a recent interview promoting his new project O Horizon, Adam Pally—who plays Wade Whipple, Knuckles' unlikely human buddy—addressed the show's future. According to Pally, the series was always conceived as a limited run, meaning a Season 2 was never really part of the plan. “It was a limited series, so… I don’t know if that was ever truly in the cards,” Pally said. “But I do know that the franchise is strong and running on a full tank of gas, so to speak. There’s a lot of plans and surprises.”

Netflix's 'The Boroughs' Hits 35M Hours in 3 Days, Duffer Brothers' Latest Sci-Fi Sensation
The Duffer Brothers' latest sci-fi series 'The Boroughs' debuted with 35 million hours viewed in three days, earning a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and topping Netflix charts.

That's not a definitive no, but it's far from a green light. The show was first announced in 2022, before Idris Elba's Knuckles even made his full big-screen debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Later that year, former Paramount CEO Brian Robbins described the project as a miniseries, which aligns with Pally's comments. So while fans might be clamoring for more, the studio may have always viewed this as a one-and-done story.

Still, Pally clearly cherishes the experience. When asked what he'd want to explore if Paramount did decide to bring Knuckles back, he focused on the cast rather than any specific plot. “I loved the cast in. I mean, getting to work with Edi Patterson every day was a dream come true,” he said. “I would love to do that, and then, through the press of it, hanging out with Idris [Elba] was great, and then, you know, I became really close with Scott Mescudi/Kid Cudi on that, and so that’s a friendship I take with me. And yeah, I just… I love when you get a job like that; it’s all about the cast.”

The Knuckles cast is indeed stacked: Idris Elba (Luther) voices the titular echidna, Adam Pally (Happy Endings) plays Wade Whipple, Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones) is Wanda Whipple, Scott Mescudi (Don't Look Up) plays Agent Mason, Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) is Maddie Wachowski, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) voices Sonic, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey (Sonic Boom) voices Tails. It's a dream ensemble that clearly made a lasting impression on Pally.

While we wait for official word on more Knuckles, the Sonic franchise continues to thrive. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie recently zoomed to Netflix's Top 5, proving the blue blur's enduring appeal. And with Jim Carrey's sci-fi sequel 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' zooms to Netflix Top 5 ahead of 2026 return, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down.

For now, all six episodes of Knuckles are streaming on Paramount+. Whether it remains a standalone gem or eventually gets a surprise second season, it's clear the Sonic universe has plenty of gas left in the tank. As Pally put it, there are “a lot of plans and surprises”—so keep your eyes on the blue blur.
