The future of The Mandalorian may be uncertain, but Katee Sackhoff is ready to step back into the boots of Bo-Katan Kryze—just not necessarily in live-action. At a panel during Tampa Bay Comic Con last weekend, moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, the actress shared her ideal vision for a Bo-Katan-centric spin-off, and it's a deeply personal story set long before the events of the hit Disney+ series.
Sackhoff, known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and Riddick, first voiced Bo-Katan in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The character, sister of Duchess Satine of Mandalore, joined the Death Watch insurgency to overthrow her sibling—only to witness Satine's execution at the hands of their ally, Darth Maul. Sackhoff later reprised the role in Star Wars Rebels, where Bo-Katan was dethroned by the Empire, and then made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian, allying with Din Djarin to reclaim Mandalore and rule its people.
Rather than continuing Bo-Katan's arc from The Mandalorian, Sackhoff is drawn to the unexplored past. She wants to delve into the childhood of Bo-Katan and Satine on Mandalore, a time when Satine was groomed for the throne while Bo-Katan was largely overlooked. "I've always wanted to see what that life was like for them growing up, and who Bo was when she was little," Sackhoff said. "I always saw her as this spitfire, like this kid who just ran around and did whatever she wanted because nobody paid attention to her because all the focus was on her sister."
For Sackhoff, animation is the ideal medium to bring this story to life. "I think animation would be a beautiful way to be able to see that story play out," she explained, suggesting that the visual style could capture the youthful energy and emotional depth of the sisters' relationship.
If fans want to see this spin-off become a reality, Sackhoff jokingly suggests they should "stalk" Dave Filoni, the newly appointed chief creative officer of Lucasfilm and the creator of Bo-Katan, who wrote her debut Clone Wars episode. Filoni's involvement would be crucial, given his deep understanding of the character and the Mandalorian lore.
While no official announcement has been made, the Star Wars animated universe is already expanding. Just last week, Lego Star Wars: The Mandalorian was released, a humorous retelling of the live-action series in which Sackhoff reprised her role. Next year, the second season of Maul: Shadow Lord is set to premiere, following the former Sith Lord as he builds a criminal empire after the rise of the Empire.
For now, fans can only hope that Filoni hears Sackhoff's pitch. With her passion for the character and the rich history of Mandalore, an animated prequel could offer a fresh perspective on one of Star Wars' most compelling figures. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
