Jason Statham is back on the big screen with Mutiny, a high-octane thriller that's drawing comparisons to the classic Die Hard formula. But early reviews suggest the film isn't quite the home run fans were hoping for. Currently sitting at a 49% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 39 critic reviews, Mutiny is off to a rocky start.

The film, which also stars Annabelle Wallis of Peaky Blinders fame, follows a blue-collar everyman who witnesses his boss's murder and is framed for the crime. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game as he tries to clear his name while unraveling an international conspiracy. It's a setup ripe for tension and explosive set pieces, but critics are divided on how well it all comes together.

Critics Are Split on Mutiny

Some reviewers have been particularly harsh. George Bate of ScreenRant gave it a 3/10, noting the "intriguing set-up" but criticizing "uninteresting characters and lack of tension." On the other end of the spectrum, Julian Roman of MovieWeb enjoyed it more, handing out a 6/10 and praising the performances, saying the film "kicks butt." Allison Rose of FlickDirect landed in the middle with a 5/10, admitting Statham is perfectly cast but that "little else makes it appealing."

This mixed reception is a bit of a letdown for Statham, who's had a rough 2026. His earlier release, Shelter, earned some of the best reviews of his career but struggled at the box office, grossing only $54 million worldwide against a break-even point of around $100 million. The film has since found a second life on streaming, but Mutiny was supposed to be his theatrical comeback.

What's Next for Statham?

Despite the lukewarm reception, Statham isn't slowing down. He's set to reprise his role as Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, which is slated for a 2027 release. He's also reuniting with frequent collaborator Guy Ritchie for Viva La Madness, a crime thriller co-starring Jason Isaacs and Camila Mendes, due in theaters on January 21, 2028.

For fans of Statham's signature brand of action, Mutiny might still be worth a matinee. The film's Die Hard-style premise and Statham's undeniable screen presence could make for an entertaining, if not critically acclaimed, ride. While Mutiny may not be the critical darling some hoped for, it's a reminder that Statham remains a reliable action star. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just curious about the buzz, it's now playing in theaters everywhere.
