Gene Roddenberry may be forever linked to Star Trek, but his creative legacy extends beyond the final frontier. After The Original Series ended in 1969, Roddenberry explored other projects, including the TV movie The Questor Tapes. It wasn't until after his death that two of his concepts—Earth: Final Conflict and Andromeda—came to life. Now, Andromeda (also known as Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda) is streaming for free in the U.S. on Tubi, offering a five-season journey that's perfect for a late-night binge.

A Commonwealth of Worlds

Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett, discovered the series' concepts in his archives and greenlit both shows. Earth: Final Conflict debuted in 1997, paving the way for Andromeda in 2000. Starring Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) as Captain Dylan Hunt, the series is set in a future where the Systems Commonwealth—a constitutional monarchy spanning three galaxies (Milky Way, Triangulum, and Andromeda)—mirrors the Star Trek Federation. This intergalactic government faces a parasitic species called the Magog, leading to a conflict that sets the stage for the entire series.

Waking Up in the Long Night

The pilot, “Under the Night,” introduces Dylan as the captain of the Andromeda Ascendant, a starship with a powerful AI named Andromeda (voiced by Lexa Doig). After a Nietzschean attack—the Nietzscheans are a humanoid species who follow Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy—Dylan is betrayed by his first officer and left stranded near a black hole. Frozen in time for 303 years, he's rescued by the crew of the salvage ship Eureka Maru, including pilot Beka Valentine (Lisa Ryder) and engineer Harper (Gordon Michael Woolvett). They inform him that the Commonwealth has fallen, and the galaxies are in a lawless era called “The Long Night.” Determined to restore order, Dylan recruits the crew to help him “rekindle the light of civilization.”

The series ran for five seasons, ending in 2005. While early reviews were mixed—SciFiNow called it “a cliché but decent enough” and compared it to Star Trek: Voyager—the show developed a loyal following.
