Middle-earth is packed with unforgettable characters, but not all of them come from J.R.R. Tolkien's books. Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy introduced several original characters that have become fan favorites, memes, and even got their own backstories. Though they often have minimal screen time and sometimes no dialogue, these characters left a lasting impact on the story and behind the scenes.

7. Albert Dreary

First up is Albert Dreary, played by Peter Jackson himself in a cameo. He appears in The Fellowship of the Ring munching on a carrot in Bree as the Hobbits arrive. His disheveled look led fans to suspect he might be in league with the local ruffian Bill Ferny. Interestingly, Dreary has a canonical family line: his father, Albert Dreary Sr., appears in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, also played by Jackson and also eating a carrot on a rainy night.

6. Figwit

Figwit is a character so minor he wasn't even named in the script, but he became a legend. During the Council of Elrond scene, an elf sits beside Aragorn and looks at Frodo when he volunteers to take the Ring. A fan noticed him and coined the name Figwit (an acronym for "Frodo is great... Who is THAT?"). The character got his own website and documentary, and actor Bret McKenzie was later called back to play Lindir in The Hobbit.

5. Lurtz

Lurtz is the first Uruk-hai created by Saruman, and he kills Boromir in The Fellowship of the Ring. In the books, Boromir's death is not shown, and there is no Lurtz. This original character adds a formidable threat and gives Aragorn a fierce combat scene. Lurtz's strength and endurance set the stage for the dangers the Fellowship faces.

4. Éothain and Freda

In The Two Towers, two young Rohirrim siblings, Éothain and Freda, flee the burning Westfold and arrive in Edoras during Théodred's funeral. Their survival and warning help clear King Théoden's mind and convince him to fight Sauron's forces. Their arrival is a turning point, showing that hope can come from the smallest voices.

3. Brego

Brego is a horse, but in Tolkien's world, horses are as important as any character. After a Warg attack, Brego saves Aragorn from drowning and finds him on his own. The Warg attack sequence is original to the movies. The horse actor, Uraeus, was a national dressage champion, and Viggo Mortensen bonded with him so much that he bought him. Uraeus passed away in 2015, but his legacy lives on.

2. Sharku

Sharku is a Warg-riding Orc who leads the attack on the Rohirrim in The Two Towers. He is a memorable villain with a distinct look, and his role in the battle adds tension. Though he has little screen time, his presence is felt.

1. Háleth

Háleth is an Elf who appears briefly in The Fellowship of the Ring during the Council of Elrond. He is one of the many original characters that enrich the world. While he may not have a major role, his inclusion adds to the depth of the movie's version of Middle-earth.

These original characters, from the comedic to the heroic, show how Peter Jackson's trilogy expanded Tolkien's world in unique ways. For more on fantasy worlds, check out our list of Top 10 Fantasy Anime Ever.
