After three years of dominating bestseller lists and igniting passionate debates among readers, Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing is finally taking flight on the small screen. Prime Video has officially cast the two central roles for its highly anticipated adaptation, ending months of speculation about who would bring Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson to life.

Esther McGregor, known for her role in We Were Liars, will step into the shoes of Violet, the reluctant hero thrust into a brutal world of dragon riders. Emilio Sakraya, who appeared in Those About to Die, has landed the coveted part of Xaden, the brooding and dangerous wingleader who becomes both Violet's fiercest adversary and, eventually, something far more complicated.

A Deadly World of Dragons and Deception

For those who haven't yet been swept up in the phenomenon, Fourth Wing follows twenty-year-old Violet, who had her life mapped out: join the Scribe Quadrant, immerse herself in books, and avoid the front lines of a war she never asked to fight. But her mother, the commanding general, has other plans. Violet is forced into the Riders Quadrant, where cadets train to become the elite dragon riders of Navarre—and where survival is anything but guaranteed.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than there are cadets, the competition is lethal. Most of Violet's fellow candidates would happily see her dead to improve their own odds. Others would kill her simply because of who her mother is. And then there's Xaden, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the quadrant, who seems to have his own reasons for wanting her gone. Yet as the war outside intensifies and the kingdom's protective wards begin to fail, Violet uncovers a secret that could change everything—and Xaden may turn out to be far more than just an enemy.

Behind the Scenes: A-List Talent and High Expectations

The series comes with serious pedigree. Michael B. Jordan is producing through his Outlier Society banner, while Yarros herself serves as an executive producer. Meredith Averill, known for her work on The Haunting of Hill House, is on board as showrunner and executive producer. With that combination of creative talent, fans can expect a faithful yet fresh take on the beloved books.

The original novel is the first in Yarros' The Empyrean series, followed by Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with a planned five-book arc. Yarros has also expanded the universe with Threshing Day, a collection of thirteen short stories exploring the bonds between riders and their dragons. Whether any of that supplemental material will make it into the show remains to be seen.

For Prime Video, this is another major swing in the fantasy space, following the success of other genre adaptations. The streamer has been building a robust slate of original series, from mind-bending sci-fi mysteries to horror reimaginings, and Fourth Wing fits right into that ambitious strategy.

What This Means for Fans

Casting Violet and Xaden was always going to be a make-or-break moment. The characters are beloved—and fiercely protected—by millions of readers who have spent years imagining their every look and line. McGregor and Sakraya now face the challenge of satisfying that built-in audience while also drawing in newcomers who have never heard of Basgiath War College.

There's no premiere date yet, but production is expected to ramp up soon. Given the scale of the source material—dragons, magic, political intrigue, and a slow-burn romance that has launched a thousand fan theories—this is one adaptation that will be scrutinized from every angle. For now, fans can celebrate the fact that the search is over and the dragon riders are officially on their way.
