Florence Pugh is trading her Thunderbolts* superheroics for something far more sinister. Netflix has dropped the first teaser for its highly anticipated adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel, East of Eden, and it reveals Pugh as Cathy Ames—one of the most chilling villains in American literature.

The seven-episode miniseries, set to premiere this fall, centers on Cathy, a woman whose beauty and charm mask a deeply manipulative and cruel nature. In the teaser, Pugh's Cathy appears captivating, but her true colors emerge as she uses her allure to control and destroy those around her, including her future husband, Adam Trask (played by Christopher Abbott of Wolf Man). Adam's troubled relationship with his brother, Charles (Mike Faist of Challengers), adds another layer of family drama to this epic tale.

A Fresh Take on a Literary Masterpiece

First published in 1952, East of Eden is widely regarded as Steinbeck's magnum opus. This new adaptation, written by Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick, Olive Kitteridge), shifts the focus to Cathy Ames, exploring her origins and motivations in greater depth than ever before. Kazan, who also co-showruns with Jeb Stuart (Die Hard), brings a personal connection to the project: her grandfather, legendary director Elia Kazan, helmed the 1955 film adaptation. That earlier version only covered the latter half of the book and starred Jo Van Fleet, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Cathy.

Directing duties are split between Garth Davis (Lion), who handles the first four episodes, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Act), who directs the final three. Both also serve as executive producers alongside Pugh, Kazan, Stuart, and others.

A Stellar Supporting Cast

Alongside Pugh, Abbott, and Faist, the miniseries boasts an impressive ensemble including Hoon Lee (Your Friends and Neighbors), Tracy Letts (Ford v Ferrari), Ciarán Hinds (Rome), Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), Joseph Zada (We Were Liars), and Joe Anders (Bonus Track). With such talent, this adaptation promises to be a gripping exploration of good versus evil, family secrets, and the darkness that lurks beneath the surface.

Netflix has yet to announce an exact release date, but East of Eden is expected to drop sometime this fall. For fans of psychological thrillers and literary adaptations, this is one to watch.
