When Fire Country returns for its fifth season, the CBS hit is doing something it hasn't done before: shaking up its entire creative direction. With a new showrunner at the helm, a reduced episode order, and a fresh face joining the firehouse, the series is clearly aiming to recapture the magic that made it a breakout hit.
Max Thieriot, who co-created the show and stars as Bode Donovan, recently opened up about the changes coming in Season 5. He's candid about the need for reinvention, saying, "We've got a lot of changes and different stuff going on, and that's frankly what you need sometimes." The actor, who also serves as an executive producer and director, emphasized that the team is focused on "finding that authenticity" and bringing back the grounded, small-town drama that fans fell in love with.
A New Showrunner and a Tighter Story
One of the biggest shifts is behind the scenes. Eric Guggenheim, known for his work on Magnum P.I., takes over as showrunner for Season 5. Along with his arrival, the season will feature just 13 episodes instead of the usual 20. Thieriot believes this shorter format will make each installment more impactful, allowing the writers to hone in on the core of what makes Fire Country special.
"It's a moment for us to be able to refocus and find those things that make Fire Country unique and special," he explained. The result, he promises, is a season that feels more intimate and character-driven, with a renewed emphasis on the personal dramas and community ties that define Edgewater.
Olivia Thirlby Joins the Crew
Perhaps the most exciting addition is Olivia Thirlby, who plays CJ Ryan, a former firefighter with a mysterious past. She arrives in Edgewater just as a catastrophic sinkhole opens up on Main Street during the annual Founders' Day festival, trapping residents underground. Bode immediately recognizes her potential as an asset to Station 42, and her presence is sure to stir up new conflicts and alliances.
Thieriot praised Thirlby's talent, saying, "Olivia is super talented. I'm not telling anybody something they don't already know." He added that her character "allows us to explore a lot of new stuff, which is exciting." The dynamic between Bode and CJ is one of the season's key threads, though Thieriot was quick to clarify that it's not a romantic one—at least not yet.
Bode's Journey and Three Rock's Role
Looking back on Bode's evolution, Thieriot admitted he originally envisioned his character spending more time at Three Rock, the prison camp where the series began. "I always thought that he would be at Three Rock longer," he said. But now that Bode is out on parole, the challenge has been keeping Three Rock integral to the story. This season, the camp will play a significant role, with storylines that deepen the connection between the inmates and the town.
Thieriot also hinted at a return to the "Friday Night Lights vibe" that initially drew viewers in—intertwined personal lives, raw emotions, and high-stakes drama both in and out of uniform. He's excited about the new characters and how they'll challenge the existing ones, saying, "We have a couple characters coming in right off the bat that are really going to launch this season."
What's Next for Bode and Chloe?
Fans of Bode's romance with Chloe (Alona Tal) will be pleased to know their relationship is still a focus, but Thieriot emphasized that the show isn't just about love stories. "We know our viewers love the romance," he said, "but also the other storylines for these characters are equally as important." Expect more suspense, raw character drama, and a deeper exploration of what drives these firefighters.
As for the future, Thieriot teased the upcoming medical spin-off, currently referred to as Edge Med, and revealed he's still hoping to bring some of his former co-stars into the Fire Country universe. With so much in motion, Season 5 promises to be a bold new chapter for the series.
